Eight straight years of below-average striped bass spawning in the Chesapeake Bay.

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources has released its 2026 Juvenile Striped Bass Index, reporting a 5.5, well below the long-term average of 10.8.

While spawning success remains below average, this year’s index is the highest recorded since 2018, offering a promising sign for the future of the fishery.

With striped bass recruitment still struggling, responsible catch-and-release practices remain more important than ever.

The next major update is expected this spring, when the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission releases its benchmark stock assessment.

Read more about the index and stay informed on the latest striped bass conservation news at the link in bio.

Look at the healthy glow on @matthaeffner’s face as he gazes upon that fine striped bass. You’d hardly know he was in the middle of a vicious, misinformation campaign against his coworkers, who were led to believe the fishing that day was “slow.“

Hear all about it on the latest episode of the On The Water podcast, live now.
