🏆 Patrocinado conjuntamente por Arches (@archespapers) y Princeton Brush (@princetonbrush), ambas marcas del Grupo FILA, este galardón reconoce la sensibilidad poética, el dominio de la composición y la particular relación entre figura, espacio y luz presente en su obra.

El propio artista describe la pieza como un encuentro entre calma y movimiento, vigilia y sueño. La figura femenina, contemplada en dos orientaciones, transforma una escena íntima junto a la ventana en una imagen de ingravidez y ensoñación.

Con experiencia profesional en cine y videojuegos, Tottman incorpora una marcada percepción espacial y tridimensional a su pintura. Sus trazos fluidos construyen la forma y capturan la calidez de la luz, el movimiento y la naturaleza fugaz de la memoria, situando su obra en un territorio donde la figuración adquiere una dimensión atmosférica y contemplativa.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the opening of James Tottman’s exhibition “Before the Light Fades” 💙 It was an unforgettable evening, made special by the people who came to experience James’s work with us.

James’s luminous paintings invite us to slow down and notice the fleeting moments of joy, presence and connection that often pass unnoticed. His flowing lines and use of natural light create an environment that feels intimate and deeply alive.

Kiitos kaikille, jotka osallistuivat kanssamme James Tottmanin “Before the Light Fades” -näyttelyn avajaisiin 💙 Ilta oli unohtumaton ja erityinen juuri sen takia, että saimme jakaa niin monen ihmisen kanssa hetken Jamesin teosten äärellä.

Jamesin valoisat maalaukset kutsuvat meitä hidastamaan tahtiamme ja huomaamaan ohikiitävät ilon, läsnäolon ja yhteyden hetket, jotka usein jäävät arjessa huomaamatta. Virtaavat siveltimenvedot ja hienovarainen luonnonvalon käyttö luovat teoksiin tunnelman, joka tuntuu samanaikaisesti intiimiltä ja vahvasti elävältä.

Lines are central to James Tottman’s paintings that are currently on display at The Blue Verve.

Across the bodies, James repeats lines of light and shadow, building the image through a rhythm of illumination and colour. Repeated across the figure, the lines capture something transient - they create motion, a fleeting moment that disappears the moment you move your eyes away.

Much like the small moments of joy in everyday life: sunlight on your skin, the first notes of a favourite song, the smell of freshly cut grass. Perhaps, this is what makes James’s paintings feel so familiar: they are about the moments we wish we could keep a little longer 💙

Viivat näyttelevät keskeisestä roolia James Tottmanin maalauksissa, jotka ovat parhaillaan esillä The Blue Verve -galleriassa.

Join us for the opening of James Tottman’s exhibition ‘Before the Light Fades’ on Thursday, 6 August, from 17 to 21 💙

James Tottman’s paintings remind us of the moments we rarely stop to notice. His works are rooted in personal memories, yet they often feel familiar from the very first glance. James uses flowing brushstrokes and subtle light to create paintings that feel deeply present.

Before returning to painting, James worked in animation and visual effects on major film productions, including Harry Potter. That background still shapes the way he approaches painting today, enriching his works with a remarkable attention to detail, light and atmosphere.

James Tottmanin maalaukset muistuttavat meitä sellaisista hetkistä, joiden äärelle pysähdymme harvoin huomaamaan niitä. Hänen teoksensa pohjautuvat henkilökohtaisiin muistoihin, mutta ne tuntuvat usein tutuilta jo ensisilmäyksellä. Warm welcome to the opening of James Tottman’s exhibition ‘Before the light fades’ on Thursday, 6 August, from 17 to 21 💙

“In a world shaped by complexity and noise, I choose to focus on simplicity, subtle sensations, and the moments when we simply exist.”

The exhibited series of James’s luminous figurative oil paintings is about the fleeting moments of joy in life, introduced through natural light and his signature flowing lines. His art is inspired by memories both deeply personal yet universally familiar, such as the scent of freshly-cut grass, the first few notes of a song we love, or the warmth of the morning sun. Simple but evocative memories that we all know and cherish that are yet often overlooked in a world full of seemingly more important noise.

James Tottman (b.1986) is a British artist best known for his figurative oil paintings with distinctive flowing lines and a strong sense of human presence. Born in Watford, England, he studied Animation and worked as a Visual Effects Artist on major film productions, including Harry Potter. After relocating to Finland in 2013, his work at Remedy Entertainment deepened his interest in Surrealism. Returning to painting during the Covid-19 lockdowns, James embraced oil painting following the profound influence of Edvard Munch’s work.

L'uso dell'arte digitale è spesso legato alle questioni attuali, con uno scopo illustrativo. Nelle opere di @jamestottman.art vediamo una mano delicata ma decisa affrontare le questioni che vuole affrontare. Se a prima vista può ingannare la figuratività dei ritratti femminili rappresentati, soggetti a lungo trattati da Tottman durante l'intera sua produzione artistica, possiamo vedere che i volti non sono realistici. Invece di espressioni, è la Natura che si fa strada, esplode e sboccia dalle arterie vitali umane, facendo diventare il corpo e le radici la stessa cosa. Proprio questa coesistenza dei corpi dovrebbe spingerci a riflettere: quanto lontano vogliamo arrivare prima di capire che fare del male al pianeta significa rifletterlo su di noi stessi? Una domanda con cui lasciamo il pubblico, che attraverso l'osservazione di questi ritratti ha l'opportunità di affrontare una questione che è stata ignorata per troppo tempo.

The use of digital art is often related to current issues, with an illustrative aim. In the works of James Tottman we see a delicate yet decisive hand in the issues he wants to address. If at first glance he can deceive the figurativeness of the female portraits represented, subjects long treated by Tottman during his entire artistic production, we can see that the faces are not realistic. Instead of expressions, in fact, it is Nature that makes its way, explodes, and blooms from the human vital arteries, making the body and roots the same thing. Precisely this coexistence of bodies must push us to reflect: how far do we want to get before we understand that doing harm to the planet means to reflect it on ourselves? A question with which we leave the viewer, who through the observation of these portraits has the chance to face a that was ignored for too long.
