Being propositioned outside a public restroom on a Sunday afternoon in a busy departure terminal waiting to catch my flight to escape the hype of the World Cup turned a daunting experience into a great human story only I can tell.
When Charlie (@carlostarpia88), an Argentinian soccer fan stopped me to swap football shirts .
My initial reaction was a “HELL NO”, but a delayed reconsideration touched my sensitivities about humanity, serendipity and how the power of football transcends cultures and borders bringing along with it the common human values of friendship and camaraderie. He was on his way to watch his dear nation and inarguably one of the most gifted footballers of our time and era in Lionel Messi. I was on my way to Accra to catch the Workd Cup on TV, all be it under protest.

On reneging about swapping, I gave him the Ghana Puma shirt off my back and tried on the Argentinian Adidas which was too small for me but the idea of leaving home in a Ghana Puma jersey and reaching my destination in an Argentinian Adidas felt like a great story to be lived and told about 2 major sports brands that were started by siblings Adolf and Rudolf Dassler.
“The Dassler brothers feud was a conflict between two brothers and their respective shoe manufacturers, Adolf ("Adi") and Rudolf ("Rudi") Dassler, in the latter half of the 20th century. Their feud led to the creation of Adidas and Puma, two of the largest sports shoe manufacturing companies in the world (and started a long-lasting rivalry between the two companies, reflected in rivalries between football clubs and a culture of animosity between Puma and Adidas employees that divided their home town.” (Wikipedia)

We exchanged Instagram IDs, took Photos and the rest is history. While his spoken English was way better than my unspoken ‘Si Amigo Spanish’, FOOTBALL breached the language gap.
The Black Stars of Ghana and la Albiceleste of Argentina’s paths might still cross at the ongoing World Cup. And if it's in the final, this story will take on a life of its own.
And just for the record, I want Denzel or Idris to play me if this story ever makes it to the big screen😅😅😅😅😅
Yeah yeah yeah, wishful thinking.

The ruins of the 1914 Kingsway portico are just steps away from our venue—but for how much longer?

Tomorrow evening, we’re gathered at the Jamestown Café to discuss the "Shopping Emporiums of West Africa" and the wider crisis of architectural conservation in Ghana.

From the luxury of the 1960s Kingsway stores to the "Tropical Modernism" that defined an era, we are debating:
Can we modernize without erasing our history?
How do we repurpose old icons for new lives?
What does the "Kingsway story" tell us about Accra today?

Come for the exhibition, stay for the conversation.

Jamestown Café, High Street,
Tuesday, 20th January
Time: 3:00pm

Shopping Emporiums of West Africa is an exhibition on the architecture and history of the famous “Kingsway Stores”.

Kingsway eventually had branches in every major town and city across West Africa selling an array of imported goods, the latest fashions, books, records, and home décor. Modelled on Harrods it was a high-end retail environment and shopping experience.

The first Kingsway Stores was opened by Miller Brothers in Accra in 1914. Located on Accra’s High Street it was set amongst the mercantile offices and warehouses with its distinctive plastered colonnade shading the large plateglass windows that displayed the luxury items.

The business was eventually bought out by the United Africa Company and Ghanaian branches opened in Kumasi, Tamale, Koforidua, Tema, Sekondi (as shown on this image), Takoradi.

A new store was built in Accra in time for the Independence in 1957 designed by architects T P Bennet and located on the newly developed Kwame Nkrumah Avenue – the modernist style architecture reflecting Nkrumah’s ambition for a ‘New Accra’. Kingsway pursued a rapid expansion drive at this time, building new stores across Nigeria, Sierra Leone, and Gambia.

Using previously unseen archival photographs, architectural drawings, marketing materials and brochures from the United Africa Company archive @unileverarchives this exhibition reveals this intriguing history. Two purpose built pavilions displaying images, drawings, films, and architectural models tell the Kingsway Story.

The exhibition was previously shown at Unilever, UK and has been shipped to Accra. From Accra it will continue its journey – heading to Kumasi, Tamale, Lagos – wherever there was a Kingsway we’ll do our best to visit….

The exhibition is curated by Iain Jackson @livuniarch and Claire Tunstall, Global Head of Art, Archives, and Records Management at Unilever.

We are thrilled that the first stop for this exhibition is going to be Archiafrika Jamestown Café, High Street Accra. From this wonderful spot the exhibition will be located next door to the first Kingsway Store.

Join us on the opening night of the 15th January 2026.

from my photowalk to test @vsco capture

Housed in a building marked 1915, Jamestown Café feels right at home in the heart of its namesake. The contrast between the weather-worn, terracotta-toned upper floor and the sun-washed mustard ground floor tells a quiet story of time. The café’s clean modern sign, pinned to this historic façade, captures a poetic tension: old bones, new breath. This is where coffee meets memory.
