POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Over the last few years, I've lived in two worlds: business and martial arts. Both follow the same principle: efficiency wins.

I remember my first spar with Izzy. I was 19—fast, explosive and determined to prove I belonged. I attacked constantly, but he stayed calm, managing distance, making small adjustments and doing only what was necessary.

Remember thinking "Upto?"

By the end of the round, I was exhausted. He'd barely started.

In the second round, he increased the pace. My movement had fat in it, and my reactions had slowed. I'd burned my reserves trying to prove a point.

A front kick landed clean in my solar plexus. I panicked and blitzed again, but now I was tired and predictable. He switched southpaw. I came forward. A flying knee came straight through the middle.

“If that landed, I was done.”

Years later, I worked alongside a billionaire and recognised the same philosophy.

We'd discuss transformers, substations, switchboards and cables, and he'd repeatedly ask:

“What's the minimum we need to do?”

Not because he was cheap, but because he understood efficiency.

If the transformer didn't need replacing, it stayed. If the switchboard worked, it remained. If the cable route could be simplified, simplify it.

Every dollar had to justify itself.

ROI is efficiency measured in dollars.

I wanted to prove something. He wanted to win.

Those are different objectives.

The highest performers in combat and business remove the fat, preserve resources, stay patient and commit decisively when the opportunity appears.

Business rewards efficiency. Fighting rewards efficiency. Life rewards efficiency.

I learned that day that I zzy wasn't mystical or untouchable.

He was human—just incredibly efficient.

Hard rounds done.

Most people see two athletes resting after training... meanwhile I've just accessed a portal of experience and left the building for a minute. Fanning the flame 🔥

There's a lot of content teaching you how to fight, but not much explaining the psychological. So that's what ima do.

One of my biggest gems was about fear.

I remember telling Dan I was scared. He called bullshit - if I was actually scared, I'd be cowering from him. He would try kill a niga... always

I never interrogated it that deeply until he said that 👀

I remember at 18, a 130kg southpaw bully broke my nose and concussed me with a piston left. I kept that record etched into my brain.

A year later he's back. I test his temperament. Still a bully. Blasts my guard...

Bet.

I throw the right, bring my 4 behind it and leave this niga stiff on the mat.

First time I properly put venom on a niga and felt the satisfaction of getting my lick back.

Lesson 1 - Don't be a bully. You don't know who that kid may become.

Lesson 2 - This is fighting. You need some venom. That willingness to do damage creates decisiveness.

Lesson 3 - Question the rationale your thoughts give you. Sometimes the demon hides behind what makes sense.

Experiences like that taught me I'm built for battle. It's been a long time since I've looked at another man and felt fear.

So what was I actually scared of?

Expectation. Performance. Embarrassment.

Ego.

I wasn't scared of another man. I was scared of looking stupid.

That conversation with Dan woke me up to the fact that your mind is something to be controlled. Different parts of you serve different purposes, and some experiences must be lived to become who you need to become.

I started studying the Middle Way after that - learning to ride life's highs and lows without being controlled by either.

You can train just to get a workout...

Or deliberately enter the fire and extract tools that serve every other part of your life.

I'll start sharing some of the gems I've found in there.

This is Bushido.

There’s nothing quite like having training partners you trust.

Thank you @jamie.walker235 🤝

Last round of sparring. Both tired, no egos, nothing to prove — just flowing, reading each other and enjoying the work.

There’s a certain kind of peace that comes after a session like this that’s hard to explain to anyone who hasn’t experienced it.

For those rounds, the outside world disappears. No work. No stress. No problems to solve. Your mind has no choice but to be completely present — see, react, move, breathe.

Then the round ends. You’re exhausted, the endorphins are flowing, and everything just feels quiet.

That feeling is one of the reasons I’ve stayed in this game for so long.

It’s more than fighting. It’s therapy, discipline, friendship and a reminder that sometimes the simplest way to clear your head is to empty the tank.

This is the life.

Auckland men had questions.
“Beard-friendly?” was one of them.
Turns out, GLOWGUARD doesn’t mess with texture, or your beautiful beard.
