Pete Brodsky 🥊

For decades, Pete Brodsky was one of the steady presences inside Westbury Boxing Club, helping shape our gym into one of Long Island’s most respected boxing gyms. Before he ever stood in the corner as a trainer, Brodsky built his own foundation in the sport as a talented amateur, reaching the New York Golden Gloves quarterfinals and the New Jersey Golden Gloves finals. That experience carried with him into the gym, where he became known for teaching the fundamentals the right way and holding fighters to the standards of old-school boxing.

Over the years, countless fighters passed through Westbury’s doors under his guidance. Among them were professionals like Cletus “The Hebrew Hammer” Seldin, James Drubin,Kevin Collins, Richie Kiley ,Joe Gadigian, Scott Lopeck, Carmine Tufano, world, ranked, and title challenging boxers, like Willy Wise ,Jake Rodriguez ,Freddie Pendleton, Rafael Williams, Lenny LaPaglia, and Daniel “The Haitian Sensation” Edouard, along with generations of countless amateurs who learned the craft of boxing on those same gym floors. Brodsky’s reputation in the Long Island boxing community was built not on hype, but on the quiet consistency of showing up, putting in the rounds, and developing fighters one day at a time.

Outside the ring, Brodsky also worked as a probation officer, bringing the same discipline and mentorship he carried in the gym to young people who needed direction. For many, boxing was more than a sport under his watch — it was structure, accountability, and a path forward.

His lifelong dedication to the sport was later recognized with induction into the New York Boxing Hall of Fame, followed by the Florida Boxing Hall of Fame in 2019, honoring the impact he made on generations of fighters.

Inside Westbury Boxing Club, Pete Brodsky was more than just a coach. He was part of the fabric of the gym itself, and his influence can still be seen in the fighters and traditions that come through our doors today. 🥊

FIGHTERS know all about this.

Trainers don’t feel it. Promoters don’t feel it. Cutmen, strength coach’s, writers, announcers, broadcasters, podcasters, critics, friends, matchmakers, booking agents don’t feel it.

It’s one thing that separates the fighters from EVERYONE else involved in the fight, from casual fans right on up to the fight’s promoter.

Like Journal Inquirer writer Randy Smith once wrote (paraphrasing),
“Many people are responsible for making fights happen. Many people are involved in putting a fight on but on the night of the fight when the bell rings, only two people answer it.”

#FightersKNOW it’s another aspect that separates us from EVERYONE else involved
