It is hard to believe that four months have passed since @stephendivenere and I made our move to Spain. It has been a dream come true; something we have talked about for many years and yet, it has also been a very intense process that has tested us in every way imaginable, as individuals and as a couple.
After almost forty years in the U. S. , this was not exactly a homecoming for me. Spain is not the same country I left in 1987 (thank God!).
This time around, Spain is a new country for me, a new beginning, a new chapter in this beautiful book of life that I get to write.
Here, in our new home, we feel safe, seen and celebrated, something we had almost forgotten we deserve. Everyone does.

But making this decision and then executing it required bravery, thoughtfulness and a lot of support. The process of shedding skin is painful and scary and that process isn’t done until it’s done. Can’t stop it, can’t reverse it.

I haven’t posted on social media in quite a long time but I guess I wanted to share this today in case there’s someone out there who is thinking of what they want their next chapter to look like.
To you, I say this:
Don’t let fear stop you. Don’t let bureaucracy intimidate you. You get to design what is next for you.
Finally, we are so grateful to the group of humans who supported us in this endeavor, even when it was hard to say goodbye.

“Dear Oscar,” is a dedication to Black girls. It’s a reminder to be consistent and resilient. To be loud in rooms that hesitate to invite us in. Writing this film, especially as my FIRST short film, has been a manifestation for not only my own future, but that of other Black girls that want to pursue careers in film. It’s more than possible. Our predecessors may be few, but they are there and I am always inspired by them.
