Our prophet salallahu alayhi wasallam said

الْحُرْبُ خُدَعَةً
“War is deception”

[1] Ahmad (no. 14,308), Al-Bukhari, (no. 3030), Muslim (17/1739), Abu Dawud (no. 6236), and At-Tirmidhi (no. 1675)
[2] Ahmad (no. 8112 and 8153), Al-Bukhari (no. 3028 and
3029), and Muslim (18/1740)

Benefits from the Hadeeth:
1. The permissibility of deception during times of war(2)
2. The encouragement to deceive during times of war.
For he who is not deceptive will be deceived.
3. Taking precautions and being on guard during times of war because war is not free from deception.
4. Warning against being deceived by way of war and being irrational in it.
5. In this lies an indication that sound judgment and intelligence during times of war takes precedence over bravery.

[2] An-Nawawi (رَحَمَهُ اللَّهُ) said, “The scholars are in agreement regarding the permissibility of deceiving the disbelievers during times of war and how deception can be achieved, unless it involves the breaking of oaths and treaties, for in this case it is not permissible.” Refer to the explanation of Sahih Muslim (12/45).
