“I think that there is something fundamentally f*cked up about the idea that when I was born, I was not the recipient of my family’s name, I was the recipient of a random name generated by the state or the adoption agency.”

This is one of three reflections I had after reading the Republic of Korea’s Truth and Reconciliation Report on the country’s international adoption program. I get into it all on the next episode of From the Kitchen Table, out Monday exclusively on substack (link in bio).

New Episode of The Banh Mi Chronicles is LIVE!

I invited fellow podcaster friend Patrick Armstrong @patrickintheworld , a Korean American adoptee, co-host of The Janchi Show @janchishow , and host of the new local storytelling series, Conversation Piece @conversationpiecepod . This conversation is a deep dive into the layers of identity, community, and what podcasting looks like today.

In this episode, Patrick opens up about:

His Korean Adoptee Experience: The decades-long journey it took to feel secure and whole in his Asian American identity.

The Podcasting Landscape: We tackle the "manosphere" reputation in podcasting head-on and discuss what it means to actively choose to push nuanced, community-focused narratives instead.

Storytelling with Purpose: How he's using his latest show to give an intimate voice to the people and untold stories of his home city, Indianapolis.

This is essential listening for anyone interested in identity, podcasting, and finding your voice.

The first time I was really around other Asian people and I shared with them that I was adopted, they responded,

“So you’re not really Asian then.”

After hearing that and other things like “we don’t see color” from my white friends and community members growing up, it confirmed to me what I already thought to be true: I am not Asian.

And it would solidify my rejection of my identity until I was 30.

I’m 35 now. I’ve done a lot of internal work. A lot of unpacking and unlearning and I can confidently say that as of Q3 2025, I am consistently living as my most whole self.

Is it perfect? No.
Is it easy? Rarely.
Is it necessary?

ABSOLUTELY.

And I appreciate everyone who has tapped in with me in any way over this last five years. I’m really starting to see it now. And it’s up.

Still vibing from my *short* stay at @wearekaan so thought I’d share this from my Creatives in Color: Indy Design Week talk about dismantling the dominant narrative of adoption.

Check the full talk out on YouTube and hear me expound of some of these ideas with poet and critic Sullivan Summer (@thesullivansummer) on my new show ‘i can’t wait.’

That drops TOMORROW!

Follow @conversationpiecepod to listen to stories from people in the Indianapolis community! Last night I had the opportunity to hear Patrick’s story and lived experience as an adopted Korean American in the U.S. His story inspired reflection on the narrative of adoption in the U.S and how we can all work together to reposition whose voices are central to these stories. Check out @janchishow to learn more!
