@drums_alive with Steve is back at YMCA Northcote 6pm, this coming Friday!

As it is NZ Mental Health Week, let's have a look at some of the ways Drums Alive, and drumming in general, contributes to good mental health...

STRESS REDUCTION
Both drumming and exercise have been shown to reduce stress levels. Drums Alive combines the two to great effect.

Studies have shown that Drums Alive:
- Reduces anxiety and depression symptoms.
- Lowers cortisol (the stress hormone) levels.
- Increases positive emotions and mood stability.

COGNITIVE FUNCTION
Research shows that drumming creates significant changes in brain structure and function.

Drums Alive participants have experienced cognitive improvements such as:
- Improved concentration and focus, via Alpha brain wave stimulation.
- Enhanced memory and attention.
- Better problem-solving abilities and cognitive flexibility.

The combination of rhythm, movement, and coordination in Drums Alive also promotes 'neuroplasticity' - the brain's ability to form new neural connections.

SOCIAL CONNECTION
Group drumming and exercising in a group is a shared experience, promoting social interaction and bonding, creating a sense of COMMINITY and BELONGING.

Drums Alive:
- Creates and inclusive environment for people of all abilities.
- Strengthens social connections and relationships.
- Improves communication skills and social interaction.
- Builds empathy and emotional understanding.

EMOTIONAL WELLBEING
Drums Alive aids the management of emotions while enhancing mood and improving overall emotional health.

Research with children and adolescents shows that Drums Alive helps develop:
- Better emotional self-regulation.
- Improved attention and focus.
- Reduced hyperactivity and behavioral challenges.
- Enhanced ability to manage stress and anxiety.

CREATIVE EXPRESSION
Drumming, and Drums Alive, allows individuals to express themselves creatively through rhythm and movement.
They can explore their own unique style, there is no 'right' or 'wrong' way.

Work on your mental health by taking some time out
