Grateful to everyone who came out on Tuesday night and especially to @rachellayown for asking me to be in conversation with her about a topic both of us care about deeply: foster care. Thank you to Clio’s for making space for this conversation and @nupress for recognizing the important perspectives this novel delivers. You can read my interview with Rachel about How We See the Gray, published earlier this year in @chicagorevbooks

Thank you to @janetmario for taking photos

Clio’s has cubby holes (like this reading room just for kids—isn’t that cool?)

It’s a bit cavernous there (the bookstore is underground) and discovering the room where we spoke was like a visit to the Bat Cave. I never knew that room existed!

Some statistics I found in preparing for the conversation shows how deep the need is. Did you know that as of March 23, 2026, this is the number of kids in foster care in Alameda County (as noted from a DCFS report):

697 children (0-17)
231 young adults (18-20)
477 approved resource family homes (relatives, fictive kin, community homes, FFA)

Appreciation for these two!

I spent the afternoon with wonderful people, including this year’s Pear Queen, all for the love of the Clarksburg Library. The Wines of Clarksburg event at Heringer Estates is just beautiful. This is what community looks like. I was so honored to be included.

Wonderful day 1 in person with Círculo de Poetas & Writers conference in Santa Cruz, CA this past weekend. It is so rich to be in bilingual and multicultural writing spaces. Kudos to all who organized this wonderful event. Looking forward to next Sat online workshops!
Even got to do a preview reading from my novel ☺️

I had a wonderful time talking to @janetmario at The Rumpus about Migrant Heart. Take a read! Thank you, Janet!

I'm still spiraling over how surreal last week felt. It was an honor to be nominated by @mysterywritersofamerica and to be welcomed in by the community. I feel really lucky to have met new friends at the event, to have had the time to do a little sightseeing, to have such gracious friends who were willing to host me, and to celebrate with the Sac Noir gang on my return. Definitely have to give a shoutout to @akashicbooks, atreediary, and @writerreynagrande as well 😁

My wife and I spent the evening at the final stop of the Sacramento Noir book tour—an incredible author panel at Beers Books. So much love for this city, its history, and the voices that bring it to life. Full write-up coming to the Four Eye Books site this week!
