🔥We had an absolute blast 💥 firing Jim’s kiln with him in the heat 🥵 of summer! 🔥
🔥Jim, who goes by The Black Potter is one of the most generous people I’ve ever met. He and his wife Jan hosted the whole crew of us as we helped load, fire, unload, and celebrate 🎊 the work that came out of this kiln.🔥
🔥It was lovely to do this with I know and love from @thevillagepotters and to meet new friends from @greenwichhousepottery, too. Whenever there is a firing- in addition to the work, there is always eating, laughing, and sharing food. Thank you is to Jim and Jan for making it all feel like a big party. We love you! 🔥

Jim’s community firing of the wood ash kiln this March was so much fun! These are Jim’s and Jan’s photos of the event, made into a video by @caramaeskincare

Day 1 at Jim McDowell’s house, loading his kiln. Jim, who goes by the Black Potter (https://blackpotter.com/), was kind enough to invite us to his home and ask us to add our pots to his kiln, which fires 🔥 today. It was an incredible experience, and I am speechless about his incredibly generous spirit. I loved sharing this experience with my fellow @thevillagepotters independent study friends and studio mates - @knookceramics, @spiritmudpottery, @jwcreates, and @molly.hitchcock. I can’t wait to help add ash the the kiln today!

The pleasure and thrill of being at an artists kiln opening!

This weekend we joined master ceramic artists and long time friend Jim McDowell and his lovely wife Jan their home outside of Asheville.

I’m sure that a word count max couldn’t cover how amazing Jim and his work is. I am honored and proud to be a friend and witness! Jim makes work through the eyes and stories of his enslaved ancestors, using his hands to tell stories and narratives that are as old as the written word but as fresh and relevant as modern hero’s.

While we visited, besides delicious hash and shrimp and grits (best I’ve ever had) @_.marcus.garcia._ and I also helped document 73 jugs on their dining room table. True pleasure and joy!

The last frame is one of the pieces we brought home to our family - “Basquiat“.

Thank you Jan and Jim! We can’t wait for the next visit and firing! ❤️
