Yesterday, we lost a light that we wanted to shine forever. Jack Gernsheimer was like a father to me — he was the person who showed me that men can be both strong and gentle, both wise and still learning. There’s nothing I can say or write that will adequately convey to you who this person was and how much he meant to so many of us — first and foremost his remarkable family who treat me as a family member.

He introduced me to the music and art I love and the world through new eyes. He showed me the romance in everyday life, beauty that made me cry, and humor that made me laugh until my whole body hurt. He quietly invited me to meet the person I wanted to be.

He struggled with Parkinson’s for nearly a decade, dealing with both its physical and cognitive impairments. In his life, he experienced both the greatest losses and the greatest joys. He made beautiful things. He loved connecting people and humbly watching them fall in love. He has a wooden beam in his living room, made from an old barn on his rural property, where all of the lovebirds who visited were encouraged to carve their initials. There must be at least 100 of them on that old piece of wood.

His home with his wonderful wife, Nancy, was my sanctuary, as I know it was for dozens of other friends of Jack and Nancy.

He died peacefully, surrounded by family. And I think we are all so glad for that. And at the same time, I think we all wish he could have lived forever. As my own husband says, “Jack was the first man you ever felt safe enough to love.”

Thank you, Jack. I love you eternally. ❤️

“I’ll ply the fire with kindling and pull the blankets up to my chin
I’ll lock the vagrant winter out and I'll bolt my wandering in
I'd like to call back summertime and have her stay for just another month or so
But she's got the urge for going so I guess she'll have to go
She gets the urge for going when the meadow grass is turning brown
And all her empires are falling down
And winter's closing in”

(AARP once wrote a little story about my friendship with Jack and his wonderful identical twin brother, Jeff. This photo, which also includes 3 people & 3 dogs, goes with that article. Link is in my bio.)
