🌈A WORLD OF COLOUR! 🎨

Colour is so much more than red, yellow and blue!

Through picture books, young children can discover how artists use colour to express feelings, tell stories, create atmosphere and capture the beauty of the world around us.

I’ve gathered 9 beautiful picture books from my own home library that celebrate colour in different ways, from colour mixing and playful patterns to the colours of Country, memories, friendship and belonging.

These books are hand-picked from my own book shelves that I have collected over the years and yes, I have a lot of picture books!!

There are so many wonderful picture books exploring colour, but this collection features some of my tried-and-tested favourites that I use time and time again with young children. 🌈🎨

And Omg this carousel post took me ages!!!

If it were your birthday today, what would you wish for?

Eddie & Moo and the Garden of Presents, sees the main characters going on an adventure, to try and create the best birthday party and present for their friend Big Princess Dinosaur. They soon realise that finding the right present can be tricky, but with a bit of imagination they seem find exactly what they need.

This beautiful book is filled with such wonder, imagination and innocence. The characters take on a very childlike presence, making it a perfect read for young children. The text is whimsical and the dialogue is fun. The mixed media illustrations create for such interesting spreads.

Created by the bestselling Jane Godwin @janiegodwin and Anna Walker @_annawalker_ you know you’ll be in for a treat with this picture book. Take a look at the flip through above.

Thanks so much to @penguinkidsaustralia for sharing this book with us

Life got busy and I got a little behind on sharing here… so here are a few picture books that have been sitting in my camera roll waiting for their turn.

Five very different picture books, all with lessons — friendship, difference, problem solving, perseverance and finding something special where you least expect it.

📖 What’s the Time, Mr Wolf? — by Katrina Germein & Kooky Chooky
📖 Bart is Different — by Barroux
📖 I Fell in a Hole — by Claire Zorn
📖 A Splash of Rainbows — by Suzanne Patterson, illustrated by Maia Batumashvili
📖 Eddie & Moo and the Garden of Presents — by Jane Godwin, illustrated by Anna Walker

A bit of a mixed bag, which is often my favourite kind of book stack.

Favourite flower? I love Irises and all the yellow flowers!

Eddie and Moo and the Garden of Presents follows Eddie and Moo’s adventures when they discover it's their friend’s birthday. Before they have a party, they need to find the gift she asked for. But what is a ‘garden of presents’? (Swipe or see comments for more details.)

This is such a sweet picture book with gorgeous messages about friendship, joy, and what's important in life.

Eddie and Moo find interesting things during their hike by taking the time to look around. From rocks to pinecones and beautiful flowers, their observations will appeal to kids who love collecting stuff.

As the search for the elusive ‘garden of presents’ continues, friend Ollie Sue helps them search. The page where they reach their goal is my absolute favourite in the book 🥹 (swipe for peek!)

The illustrations are bright and cheerful, and some pages have lovely little details that would make a great seek and find activity (like Ollie Sue’s tree with things hidden in the branches).

I especially like how the artwork is really engaging and kid friendly. Little ones will want to have a go at drawing or painting dinosaurs and flowers after reading this.

And it was so nice to read a story about dinosaurs that are friendly and fun. Big Princess Dinosaur is the best name ever, plus she has a blossom pendant and a birthday balloon!

This is an adorable book showing how great days and happy memories are made with the people who care about you.

📚 Three days of literary fun!

Children, families and educators across the Central West recently joined us at Storyfest Out West.

From student sessions and interactive activities to our workshops for grown-ups, the programme invited people of all ages to celebrate storytelling.

✨ For young people in regional Queensland, encountering stories and storytellers that speak to their world is particularly impactful.

These storyteller interactions sparked curiosity, confidence and new ideas, supporting long-term opportunity far beyond the festival itself.

We would like to thank our Out West sponsors and supporters, festival partners @outbackpioneers and Longreach School of Distance Education, volunteers and the Storyfest Squad.

What we liked about EDDIE & MOO AND THE GARDEN OF PRESENTS:
* Firstly, we love Saturdays, birthdays and being outdoors. This book already has the makings of what might be one of our favourite books!
* Secondly, we liked Eddie and Moo’s favourite snacks, and we agree that Icy Poles would melt on the hike!
* Thirdly, even though they had already hiked for much of the day, we loved Eddie, Moo and Ollie Sue’s going back to retrieve Big Princess Dinosaur, so that they may show her what they discovered.
* Finally, we adore Anna’s style of illustration and her use of water colour. This is a medium we want to try when we are older!
