IMPROMPTU FILM CLUB + performances this Thursday

Phase Film Club comes to Galleria Objets @galleriaobjets this Thursday 22 October for an evening of cinema, readings and live performances… Around first loves, winding roads, freedom and longing

We’re screening Nobuhiko Obayashi’s His Motorbike, Her Island (1986), adapted from a novel by Yoshio Kataoka: a dreamlike exploration of romance, youth, freedom and danger. Moving between black and white and colour, city streets and island landscapes, the film slips between memory and fantasy, capturing the restless feeling of being young and free and the nostalgia of first loves

Alongside the screening, London-based writer, curator and filmmaker Kevin Omosele @omoselekevin has curated readings and music from:

With improvised flute from Anton Svetlichnyi @switlichoke with Debussy-like textures and Japanese musical influences

And a performance by Kairi Tokoro @kairitokoro a Japanese artist based in London whose practice moves between sound, sculpture and performance, exploring the rhythms and relationships between bodies and materials

For the evening, we’ll settle into Galleria Objets’ intimate brick-walled space on Brick Lane, with rugs, soft seating and free popcorn!

Bring a pillow or cushion if you can, we’re making the space cosy; Floor seating will be part of the setup, so please message us if you need a chair

What an event! ✨ Huge thank you to @shaw.22, and @playing__outside for making it all happen.

Met so many lovely vintage lovers and got to catch up with some beautiful friends too 🫶🏼 The range of vendors was honestly incredible—so many unique pieces, I wish I could’ve seen everything and been there today for the second day!

Now it’s time to rest and recharge for next week’s @feelancobypeilan weekend pop-up… bringing ALL the sale vintage 💫

WHAT IS THE CYBERBAROQUE?

In EIAG’s most self-indulgent event yet, curator Ester Freider presents a symposium on the neologism 𝒸𝓎𝒷𝑒𝓇𝒷𝒶𝓇𝑜𝓆𝓊𝑒 from her essay “I LOST TRACK OF WHAT WAS REAL”. Using Belle Delphine, Deleuze, and William Egginton as guiding influence(r)s, the essay constructs the 𝒸𝓎𝒷𝑒𝓇𝒷𝒶𝓇𝑜𝓆𝓊𝑒 as an allegory for control or governance through sophistry. Some guiding questions for the symposium will be: How does the ethos of advertising affect the contemporary artmaking process? How have baroque characteristics such as excess and illusion resurgere in contemporary media? What is the value of a trickster?

At the symposium, we’ll be tracing around this idea through presentations from writer Gabrielle Sicam, writer MPS Simpson, and Ester, a prose reading from Janice Chan, a “SCREENSHOT BABEL” mini writing workshop from Ester and media theorist Gary Hall, a screening of Dana Dawud’s film MONAD, and exclusive EIAG merch. Drinks provided by Anomalous.
