Thankful for @muholizanele @muholiart_institute artist residency in South Africa in September. I saw and learned so much from the experience. Give thx for everyone I met and spent time with. Bless up my cohort @japwoodruff an amazing photographer out of Chicago doing great work. Give thx to Avril and @plaatjiesl for opening up your homes to us, sharing your stories and family with us. Such a strength to be around y’all’s vibe. Good to see how long lasting friendships thrive. This will be the first of many postings about my travels so don’t worry if you’re not in the first 20 pics. Khululekani: A Blossoming 🌱

On 8 September, the Muholi Art Institute, in collaboration with WiSER at Wits University, opened Khululekani: A Blossoming, marking 20 years of Zanele Muholi’s ongoing photographic series, Faces and Phases.

Begun in 2006, Faces and Phases is a living archive of Black LGBTQIA+ lives. For twenty years, Muholi has photographed members of the community, frequently returning to the same participants over time to build an evolving record of presence, transformation, memory, and continuity.

The opening brought together artists, cultural workers, academics, friends, collaborators and members of the community to celebrate two decades of Faces and Phases and the people whose lives continue to shape this living archive.

You'll never meet the same me twice.

A self-proclaimed quick change artist.

I have so many lifetimes and lifelines dying to be named. It got me thinking about the difference between REINVESTING and REINVENTING.

One, a parlor trick, a gimmick, a glamor. Inauthentic. The other is soul shattering, cortisol spiking, 10 minute voice memos to friends (that should be rerouted to your therapist), a fundamental disruption to the being that you currently know while stitching together the new version without a pattern.

All this to say...that change came with some things.

Reinvest, not reinvent.
Reinventing is cosmetic.
Reinvesting is excavation.
Reinventing changes the presentation.
Reinvesting changes the pattern.
Cortisol spikes. Gut punches. No performance. No apologies. No explanation.

I can’t wait to meet the next me.

I gotta a lot of shit to say.

I recently sat down with @uchicagomed to discuss the life changing experience of receiving my second kidney transplant after 13years on dialysis.

I also spoke about receiving a previous Kidney offer in September of 2024 that unfortunately after further testing, deemed not a viable kidney for me.

Heartbroken is not even a word to suffice my feelings at that time, but God had bigger plans en route.

Most importantly I spoke extensively on why it took so long for me to find a match, as well the amazing treatment plan called Plasmapheresis led by Dr Kyeso that got me transplanted this second go around.

Words can’t express how thankful I am to the whole transplant team at @Uchicagomed, especially Dr Kyeso.

Thank you for saving my life 🥹❤️
