it’s been one year yall // since we left Los Angeles.
And I never got around to posting our going away party at @generalleesla. It was one of the best nights and an absolute dream of a send off after a decade of living in one of the best cities. So grateful to the memories and so grateful to be where I’m at now, with newness comes change and adaption and evolution. Every part of it has been necessary.

Thank you to all our loved ones for pulling up and loving on us. So many of us in this video went through our own versions of evolving and changing and adapting. But we’re all still here, making the best of the time we have. Love you all.

Q1 of 2025 really set the tone and got me fired up for what’s to come this year 🤩
so many laughs, expansions in my career field, pure love coursing through every interaction. I’m always reminded of just how blessed I am 🙏🏽

Feeling incredibly grateful for one of my favorite birthdays yet!

The outpouring of love—from the calls, messages, and shoutouts to the time spent with family and friends—was truly overwhelming in the best way. Every moment was a reminder of how blessed I am to have such amazing people in my life.

For our 1 year anniversary and inspired by Writer, Poet, Activist and Visionary Audre Lorde, we presented our talents In The Name of Audre.

From the visual work presented on altars to the talent on the stage, this is a showcase of Black, sapphic creativity with one intention: to take up the space that we are often denied.

Cleos you really showed love. For us it’s about creating community & melaninful connections.

🎤 ARTIST SPOTLIGHT 💫

1. Los Angeles OG and multidisciplinary artist JaQlyn is a professional creative with a background in creative production, community engagement, and education. Art serves as both her first love and her purpose, and her work distinctly showcases a fantastical visual style offering a captivating visual narrative of her life experiences.

2. Dee Williams is a queer, Jamaican-American, photographer and social content director whose work centers around stories of the African diaspora.

3. MyLin is an abstract expressionist and paint instructor. With acrylic as her medium of choice, MyLin best represents herself experimenting with her palette knife and brushwork techniques.

4. Chanelle Tyson is a QBIPOC filmmaker. A graduate of New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, Chanelle seeks to create empathy and solidarity through their work. In 2022, Chanelle won the Concord Originals x Outfest Pitch Contest, where they were awarded funding for their film “Artificial” which premiered at Outfest Film Festival and was featured at the Whitney Museum in New York as a part of the 2024 Whitney Biennial, which is the longest running survey of contemporary American art.

5. Bri Giger is a comedian, actress, improviser, writer, DJ and activist who will be showcasing her viral music video “I’m That Nigga”.

Thank You for showing up and supporting our opening day at MOCA presenting American Gurl: home—land, a curation of six short films that negotiate land, diaspora, home, and displacement.

Our community gathered to experience the works of artists Melvonna Ballenger, Shenny De Los Angeles & Amanda Morrell “iiritu,” Ella Ezeike, Solange Knowles, Alima Lee, and Cauleen Smith.

As we celebrate Black History Month while simultaneously grappling with the socio-political repercussions of the United States’ current administration, the themes explored in this exhibition could not be more timely or urgent. This iteration of American Gurl further explores the concept of home—how locations shape our identities and reflect on themes of diaspora and displacement—revealing how these narratives inform our collective connection to place.

Thank you to everyone who joined us in conversations that we hope will continue to evolve, just as our American Gurl series has over the years. We can’t wait to hear what resonates with you during your next visit to the exhibition at MOCA. Be sure to tag us and the artists!
