LIFF is honoured to announce the LIFF Legacy Audience Choice Awards 2026, presented by the first Lethbridge International Film Festival Society. With the first society now closed, LIFF is honoured to officially take on the name The Lethbridge International Film Festival.

The origins of the first Lethbridge International Film Festival Society date back to 1985, initially developing its programming alongside the World Citizen Centre. 2005 - 2025, the film festival–organized by a small group of volunteers - presented a variety of thought-provoking international films in partnership with the Lethbridge Public Library. In 2015, the group was incorporated with the Government of Alberta as a registered society, with a mandate to organize an annual festival of outstanding international films for public viewing and discussion.

The first Lethbridge International Film Festival Society has now shut down and wants to take this chance to express gratitude for the support of the Lethbridge Public Library, the University of Lethbridge, Lethbridge Polytechnic, the Community of Southern Alberta, the discussants, and the volunteers over the last four decades.

Continuing its dedication to supporting both the art of filmmaking and the filmmakers themselves, the Society offers cash prizes for Audience Choice Awards at the new Lethbridge International Film Festival.

Enjoy this LIFF interview with Lethbridge filmmakers Kier Griffiths and Tyler Alexander on their process in making the found footage archive LIFF-commissioned film ‘From the shadows, to paradise’. Don’t miss this once in a lifetime moment when artist Jared St. James from Montreal will perform his live score over it for the first time in its world premiere at the Gala!

Through the shadows, to paradise
Opening Film LIFF Commission | World Premiere | 9PM | Viewing Gallery

A circle has no beginning and no end. Wheels burn on a road leading nowhere. The serpent consumes itself. The drive within that seeks meaning in destruction and cause for resurrection. A name from a dream and a promise: Keep Falling And I’ll Find You. In Through the shadows, to paradise we enter a study of cycles, repetition and drive using found and archival footage.

Jared St. James uses heartbreak as fuel for his nostalgia-driven lyrics and 80s-inspired vocals, dancing through genres and decades past with a cinematic flair and camp sensibility. A classically trained singer and self-taught instrumentalist, his sound is an ethereal timbre that remarks on modern love and escapism.

HOMO is the duo of Kier Griffiths and Tyler Alexander, created to proliferate homosexual happenings throughout the prairies.
