“Sweatsuits in the 1980s will replace the jeans and T-shirts of the 1970s,” co-founder Howard Himelstein 🌴 The March 31, 1980 issue of People featured one of the earliest articles on the brand, detailing its meteoric rise and growing popularity among celebrities. One thing I love in particular about this article is that it highlights how ahead of its time Camp Beverly Hills was. While detractors called it a fad, the brand was creating a lifestyle of leisure that many still live by today. Additionally, as someone interested in sharing the brand’s full history, I love hearing a more detailed story of how it all started. Three guys with zero experience in the clothing business sat around a pool and came up with an idea that, by 1987, was expected to gross $110 million in that year alone. — CBH article featured in People Magazine Year: March 31, 1980 — . #campbeverlyhills #vintagela #80spopculture #1980s #80sfashion

49 years ago today, Camp Beverly Hills held its grand opening! 🌴 To celebrate, let’s take a look back at the brand’s first year festivities. Held at the Sherman Square Roller Rink, co-founders Jeff Stein, Howard Himelstein, and John Lasker celebrated with a night of roller skating. The guest list included many celebrities—Cher, Tim Curry, and Desi Arnez Jr., to name a few. Featured in this post are two articles detailing the fun-filled night. THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER “Roller Skating fiend Cher hardly missed a round of skating at the Sherman Square rink when Jeff Stein, Howard Himelstein and John Lasker invited skaters of come-all ages to test their roller derby prowess and celebrate the first anniversary of Camp Beverly Hills, the surplus shop that specializes in the wrinkles-look-good look. Jeff told Artie Shaw, “Cher has parties here every Monday night,” and Errol Wetson announced that Regine’s club will be at Santa Monica and La Cienega, where the bowling alley was, and that it will be an “indoor/outdoor” experience. Desi Arnaz Jr., Liz Torres and designer Keith Hodges, WWD’s Dale Kern with a Susan Hayward hairdo, Ed Begley, Neil Shenker, Helena Kallianiotes, comic Steve Bluestein, Britt Ekland skated around the rink like lightning streaks as the hot new hit, “I Love America,” roared through the loudspeaker. “Everyone’s dancing to it at Studio 54 in New York,” nodded Steve Tisch of the Tisch family that owns the Loews hotels around the world (including the unbeatable Regency in Manhattan). “Isn’t it about time,” piped a voice, “that Studio One updated its tapes to include ‘Shame’ and ‘Boogie Oogie Oogie’ and ‘Used Ta Be My Girl’!” CONTINUED IN COMMENTS — The Hollywood Reporter article Publication date: July 6th, 1978 The Los Angeles Times article Publication date: July 7th, 1978 — . #campbeverlyhills #vintagela #skating #80spopculture #70sfashion

Jeffrey Stein @jasjas1997 a serial entrepreneur changed the casual fashion world with his creation of Camp Beverly Hills, which became a touchstone of LA Culture throughout the 1980’s and into the mid ’90’s. He also founded Elixir Tonics & Teas, and multiple LA night spots. Since 1989 he’s chaired a trust to protect endangered African Wildlife, having established a successful national park in Mkomazi, Tanzania with it’s Black Rhino Sanctuary and the current project in Kora, Kenya. On September 7, 2024 a large exhibition of the Art & Science work of June Wayne (1918-2011) opens at the @fullertonmuseum in Orange County, California, other of her works simultaneously featured at the Palm Springs Museum @psartmuseum as a part of the Getty’s Pacific Standard Time @gettymuseum. Wayne provided a prophetic vision of science as a new poetry, seeing art and science as originating from the same river of human imagination. From 1965, as no other artist since Leonardo da Vinci, Wayne focused on science in her paintings, prints, and tapestries exploring genetics, optics and perception, earthquakes, wind and tidal waves, quantum physics, climate change, artificial intelligence, the expansion of the tools of mass surveillance, and the outer cosmos and the origins of the universe. Our website has a section dedicated to Wayne’s seminal explorations (link in bio). In advance of the fall museum exhibitions, we are inviting a number of innovative artists and thinkers in a variety of fields to reflect on Wayne’s work. No incidental day. As I ready for the March for Reproductive Rights, taking place nationwide today at a downtown near you, I find beauty and power in “The Sustained Sequence” by Jennifer McClure. The New York-based photographer and educator has turned the lens on herself throughout her career, and pregnancy lead to a self-examination on identity—as well as a body of stunning images like this one, which spotlights what today’s march is all about: women having the legal right and agency to make their own choices about their bodies and their lives. McClure’s self-portrait is among the 150 works available by auction tonight through Sunday to raise much-needed funds for the #nonprofit #LosAngelesCenterofPhotography. For this 6th Annual Fundraising Gala & Auction—held virtually, again, this year—the theme is “The Year of Gratitude and Hope.” I am grateful to be asked again to serve on the committee for @la_centerofphoto, which includes talented pals and fellow photography enthusiasts (tagged) including #NormanReedus, who willl appear during the online fete, from 5-5:30PST. See you at the March. And see you this evening. #mybodymychoice #womenswork #feminist #feminism #rallyforabortionjustice #photography #photos #artphotography #lavieenrose
