Early public feedback on #theunwindingfilm is validating every instinct I had when writing and then making it. CAST & CREW & FRIENDS - please SHARE the links (in my bio) here, and on Twitter and Facebook, and anywhere else you travel online, to help the film find as many people as possible, especially any vulnerable / older people who don’t feel seen. My analytics on YouTube tell me that 2/3 of the audience watching through the end credits are 65+ years old, which is just fine by me. Aside from documentaries, this is my 2nd film as writer-director in 20 years, and I want to make the feature of this too - so all the support I can muster for this short will help tremendously. UPDATE: “The Unwinding” trailer is now live! Trailers are tricky; I’ve cut a bunch of them, for my films and others, but striking the right balance between everything is never easy for me. This one is a little long but it best represents the story I intended to tell as succinctly as I could, after a solid week’s worth of work. Trailers for short films are mostly for friends, family, colleagues, and for festivals to use or pull clips from anyway, not for a mass audience as with a feature, so I’m cool with the runtime. I hope you like it, and please feel free to share far and wide if you do. In addition to the Cinematography awards contests we’ve already advanced in, I’ve got us entered into most of the big festivals upcoming as well as a few smaller regional ones in the EU that I think would be worth screening at. I’ll keep everyone updated when I get word on anything, and again: a massive THANK YOU to everyone involved in making this happen. Wow!! We’re now 2 for 2 with festivals: I just got the notification that “The Unwinding” has been selected as a finalist in the EUROPEAN Cinematography Awards! I’ll never get tired of giving love to our Director of Photography, Naeem Seirafi, plus our UK camera and lighting crew Bii, Kyle, Jeremiah, Chris, and Justin, producer Roger King and EP Stan Ruszkowski, producer-dialect coach-my wife Susan Qin Davis, and our colorist Walter Volpatto, who’s worked with everyone from Tarantino to Nolan and now us…to Russell Allen at Arri Rental UK, and to everyone else in our fantastic cast and on our hard-working crew who made it happen. Super proud of everybody’s work here, and I’m thrilled to begin getting this recognition for everyone’s efforts. An update re our short film “The Unwinding”: I’ve shared it via a private link with a few close friends / industry colleagues, and have gotten really gratifying feedback. This email in particular yesterday - to me and my producer Roger - really made me smile, and I wanted to share it so that our wonderful actors and crew could get their flowers as well. At this point, I’ve gotten us entered into a handful of great festivals and am now waiting on the notification dates to start rolling around. There are other friends who’ve gotten the screening link that I’m waiting to hear back from, so hopefully when they get a chance to have a look they’ll also enjoy it as this person did. Update re “The Unwinding”: It’s been two and half weeks since I saw these lovely people in London, and going through the behind-the-scenes photos today, while taking a break from refining the edit of the film - first rough cut is complete, on to the second pass now - I miss and appreciate all of them more than ever. Folks: we - all of us, together - made a very special little film. THANK YOU to all who helped / supported / cheered from afar. Photo dump 1 of 2 here because there were so many shots I liked of everyone, plus I had to include a few of me for Momma and to remind myself I was there, too, since it all seems like a dream. Announcement time! Presenting “The Unwinding”, a short film that I outlined in 2014 in Los Angeles, wrote in January in Paris, and directed last week in London, finally brought to life with a hearty pirate ship of amazing collaborators. After 4.5 years locked into strictly producer-mode, I had to do something of my own, to remember and reclaim who I am at the core, and the themes we explore in this reflect things I’ve dwelled on for years that gave me just the chance to do that in a way that’s deeply satisfying. These are just a few screen grabs of proxy files from the edit, but they hint at the wonderful work done by all. I’ll tag cast and crew I’m connected to on here, but please add yourself *if* you were on my callsheet. My goal is to have the cut in time to submit to the Toronto International Film Festival this year, and others as things roll along. I couldn’t have done this without the whole-hearted support and participation of all involved, from my wife Susie Qin to my partner in all things cinema Naeem Seirafi who flew from Burbank to bring the images to life, and who convinced Russell and the team at @arri_rental UK to help us out with a wonderful package to shoot it. Extra extra special thanks to our newest forever-brother Roger King, a UK-based actor and producer who made this not just possible, but far beyond my expectations (and to Joy Zhou for making the introduction in the first place!). I’m full of love for everyone involved who showed up, stepped up, and lent their talents to this project. Most of all, to the extraordinary performances by Kevin West, Izyan Hay, and Charles Doherty - all three were a revelation and luminous onscreen.
