Giant Freshwater Stingray
Himantura chaophraya
For @Jasmine.monteiro
Photo credits to @natgeowild, and a special thanks to @thisisjeremywade.

One of the world's largest freshwater fish, the Giant Freshwater Stingray is an enigmatic ray found in the expansive river systems of Thailand, including the Mekong, Chao Phraya, and Tapi River basins. They are also found in the Kinabatangan River in Malaysia, as well as on the island of Borneo.
It's unknown exactly how the Ray is found on both Borneo and the mainland, but it's not entirely out of the question that they swam, seeing as how they seem to have retained some tolerance to higher salinity levels, despite being a freshwater fish. It's also possible that the Bornean population became isolated on the island at the end of the last ice age when the glaciers receded and sea levels rose.
This species is typically found over sandy bottoms in large rivers, at depths of 5 to 20 meters.
Being chondrichthyes, or cartilaginous fish, male rays have claspers which they use to fertilize the female's eggs internally. Giant Freshwater Stingrays give birth to live young, like most other species of ray. Many females are found in estuaries and it is thought that they give birth in brackish waters, though the reason for this is not currently known. There are no records of this species from fully marine habitats.
The Giant Freshwater Stingray is not aggressive, but being a stingray they are armed with a venomous sting that they use for self defense. The sting of the Giant Freshwater Stingray can be up to 15 inches long and can easily pierce bone. The venom is similar in chemical composition to the venom of a rattlesnakes.
When hooked, rays stick themselves to the bottom of the river, sometimes burying themselves under a few feet of sand. Pulling the Giant Freshwater Stingray off the bottom is described by anglers as feeling like "pulling the drain plug out the river". More often then not, boats that hook these rays are pulled more by the ray than the other way around.
