This month, SpecLit is going analog 📬 Join us for a letter writing workshop on May 28th @apprentice.oakcliff ✍🏾

Letter writing is an ancient mode of communication, personal archiving, and connection. Some of my earliest memories include writing letters back and forth to my grandma, and we continued this practice up until her passing 💐 Learning at a young age that you don’t need anything but pencil, paper, and a stamp to make yourself heard and keep connection alive has become a foundational tenet to my writing practice. I hope this workshop will introduce you to the joys of keeping a penpal and even writing letters to your past and future self 💌

Come out to discuss your favorite epistolary (def: a book or text written in the form of a letter or series of letters) texts and write letters to your homie-lovers on fun stationery! There will also be information on current political prisoners in the United States and information on how to write to them and/or become a penpal for an incarcerated comrade.

Hope to see you there, bring a friend! RSVP link in bio 🔗 blue background, green text describing letter writing workshop on may 28th at apprentice oak cliff at 7:30pm

For the writers in the house ✍🏾👩🏽‍💻

Speculative Literary’s spring/summer 2026 writing group is here! Write For Our Lives is a monthly generative writing group meeting on the last Saturday in April, May, and June @auracoffeedtx in Denton, TX.

Writing often gets credited as a highly independent art form, but here at SpecLit we believe that often the best work is created in/with/for your community, in response to and in relationship with our real lives. Especially in a time when we’re increasingly being encouraged to hand over our mental and creative faculties to big tech, it’s critical that we retain our own voices and imaginations.

Whether you’re a beginner writer or a seasoned professional, if you’re looking to experiment with poetry or polish off your novel—this is the space for you! This is a low stakes, high reward opportunity to dedicate consistent time to your writing practice this spring/summer in community with others. Link in bio to RSVP 🔗📝

We’re running it back on Essay Club! 📝 Join us Thursday, April 30th at 7:30pm @apprentice.oakcliff for our next meeting. Together we’re reading a recent essay published in @scalawagmagazine by @abitmoresol titled “The Parables Are An Autopsy: The Black and Global Southern Parables of Collapse.” An incredibly lyrical yet informative piece of writing that bridges climate disasters in the US with ongoing genocide in Palestine and everything in between, this meditation on our current overlapping crises presents a great introductory foray into contemporary political writing 📚⚒️

As always, this event is for/by Black Queer folks yet free and open to the public/all those who respect the space! Link in bio to RSVP (spots limited!) and to check out the essay, though don’t worry if you can’t in advance—we’ll read it together! 🫂

So full after last night’s Essay Club! Endless thanks to @apprentice.oakcliff for allowing us to use the space and for every attendee who came, read aloud, and shared their thoughts with the group! Y’all’s reflections on the erotic, power, and community were so insightful and I know each one of us took home something special from the space.

My dream for SpecLit is for people from all literacy levels to feel comfortable and confident knowing this is a safe space to struggle, learn, and leap. Stay tuned for a summer full of programming—more essay clubs, literary salons, and writing workshops coming your way! 📝📚

Super excited for Essay Club with y’all this week! 🤓 I did my re-read of our selected essay, “Uses of the Erotic: The Erotic As Power: by Audre Lorde and found so many gems I hadn’t noticed before—and new tensions. Swipe through to check out how I tend to annotate: some notes where I draw connections to other things I’ve read or found interesting, some questions, some points for me to follow up on later, and sometimes simply placing emphasis where I felt it was needed. ✍🏾

If you’re joining us for essay club this week, be prepared to read aloud! In the spirit of community-supported literacy and in the style of the Black Panther Party’s political education groups, we will be reading the essay aloud in its entirety. We will go around the room each reading a couple paragraphs, pausing after every one or two to take in what we just read (Lorde is a poet, resulting in beautiful yet sometimes densely metaphorical writing!) and check for comprehension. These pauses aren’t for diving into discussion just yet, they’re just for checking in so we don’t leave any readers behind are to break down any unfamiliar words or turns of phrase as soon as they appear. No matter how long it takes, we’re gonna read together! There is zero room for shame at SpecLit and readers of all levels are welcome. If you can’t be patient with your fellow readers, don’t bother pulling up—this is a space to grow our literacy skills as a community ✊🏾

Once we’ve finished our collective reading we’ll dive into discussion—I’m preparing some questions (preview on the last slide) but we will follow our hearts and lean into whatever folks are most eager to tease apart from the essay. Leaning into the erotic!

I’m so looking forward to our time together this Thursday 3/26 at Apprentice Oak Cliff! There’s still a couple spots left to RSVP, and reminder to anyone who can no longer attend to formally un-RSVP so that others may attend.

Drop any questions, annotation tips, or literacy treats you want to share in the comments ⬇️
