A note from the Artistic Director:

In my 10 years as the Director of PJCE Records, I have never seen an artist tackle a project as ambitious as Rebecca Sanborn's Shadow Work. PJCE has been there since its inception in 2021, so I was thrilled when Rebecca approached us about recording the album with our large ensemble and releasing it on PJCE Records.

Just like producing a season of concerts with a 12-member jazz band, an album of this scale — there are almost 30 artists involved — is a gargantuan feat. Grant funding and album sales only cover a small portion of the costs. With that in mind, I interrupt your regularly scheduled PJCE communications with an important request.

Will you help fund Shadow Work TODAY?

While PJCE Records partners with artists to release their albums, individual artists are responsible for recording and producing their own music. Funds raised from this Kickstarter campaign help Rebecca bridge the funding gap between the three (3!) grants she received from the Regional Arts & Culture Council, Music Oregon, and the Holler Fund and the significant costs of recording a body of work at this scale.

His playing on Side A of Shadow Work is absolutely stunning and I am so proud to have his talent and heart on this record.

Fazendo hoje um mês que entrei pela primeira vez no estúdio figure8sound com meu filho Pyata G. Penedo na cidade de Portland Oregon EUA pra gravação internacional do Álbum Street of Songs ( Rua das Canções) ,durante 2 semanas gravando 8 hrs diárias conseguimos gravar 19 músicas de violão e voz, um sonho se materializou e agora segue pros arranjos musicais .

Late but heartfelt post.

I commend everyone who posted last week and the week before! 😅 Whew!

NFA 2026 in Oregon, Portland was beautiful! The Portland Airport (pictured above - wooden bleachers) is adorable - my favorite airport in the country for sure!)

Once again it was a honor serving on the board with my fellow board members under the leadership of President Jennifer Grim and Executive Director Jennifer Clarke.

I enjoyed catching up with my Powell family, flute friends from around the world, and being inspired by the amazing performances. (I took it upon myself to include some photos from last year’s conference (just a few, lol).

Beloved Stephen Finley was recognized for his lifetime of work in the flute community and although the regional fires had the area in a bit of a haze the cascading flutes of the convention eventually gave us beautiful cool and breezy clear skies!

Hope to see you all in Minneapolis next year! 🙌🏾

Taking over for George Colligan to host the Tuesday jam sessions at Jo Bar this summer. First and third Tuesdays of each month. I'm hoping to mix up the scenes a little bit. Portland jazz has been feeling a little siloed lately. I hope you come out and play with some people you have played with before, but also new people.
Drums, keyboard, and amps provided.

Composer and pianist Jasnam Daya Singh says, "We come from freedom, and even if that is denied to some of us for some time, we inevitably go back to it."

Singh's composition "Mother Freedom" is dedicated to the indomitable Harriet Tubman. The piece honors the people who were forced to endure the journey from West Africa to what would come to be known as America, and the lessons we must learn from this history.

Hear the world premiere of "Mother Freedom" at Rise in Love on Monday, February 16th, at 7:00 pm at Portland's TaborSpace. Tickets are free when you RSVP!
