The residence of Toby Shor is a break from usual coastal homes. The paprika-and-purple exterior hints at what’s waiting inside: a double-height living room wrapped in art, collected over decades of travel and friendship with the artists themselves. Built in 1956 and renovated with local architect Court Koester, the house blends midcentury bones with a color palette that’s all Shor’s own. “I just see things, and I know it’s a good piece,” she says of her eye for collecting. From a tuxedoed mannequin greeting guests at the door to a theater room built around original 1950s wood, every corner tells a story. When we started sourcing tile for the art niches, nothing was quite meeting the vision we had in mind. What started in 1969 with a $400 investment and a garage studio behind Freddie and Joann Martinez’s house has grown into Freddie Records, one of the most influential independent Latin labels in the country. Six Grammys and Latin Grammys later, the label’s roster has included Ramón Ayala, Jimmy Gonzalez y Grupo Mazz, Sunny and the Sunliners and Selena y Los Dinos in their early years. Now, three generations deep, the Martinez family continues to run things with the same values founder Freddie Martinez Sr. started with. “It’s important to maintain the core values of what my grandpa has envisioned for the company,” said Monique Martinez, executive assistant and signed artist. “I’m excited for it to grow and see how many other different artists we can bring in.” 56 years in, and the story’s still being written. Named for the five family members who built it—Bret, Alisa, Aiden, Reagan and Ellis, this Corpus Christi Southside spot runs on wood-fired brisket, ribs and sausage smoked over post oak. But it’s the sides that really shine: cheesy tater tot casserole with a kick, mac and cheese made with a beer béchamel, honey butter cornbread, cowboy beans loaded with brisket and bacon and a cast-iron jambalaya made in the same pot Bret once used on camping trips. Save room for dessert because the peach cornbread pudding and the family’s “Lord’s pudding” banana pudding are worth it. From the kids clearing tables after school to grandma stepping in when needed, BAARE BBQ feels less like a restaurant and more like a backyard gathering.
