What can fiction tell us about who we are — and the complicated, messy realities of being human?

Literary fiction rarely offers easy answers. Instead, it takes us into complex lives, unsettles our assumptions and asks us to see the world through someone else’s eyes.

Three of Australia’s most compelling writers, Robbie Arnott, Tony Birch and Alice Pung, join literary editor and critic Jason Steger for a conversation about truth, storytelling, moral complexity and the power of fiction to make us think differently.

Book now via the link in our bio! 🎟️

Cause to get out my cranky face. Meanwhile over on Twitter there is a storm raging over the arrogance of @melbwritersfest cannibalising @bgowritersfest’s dates without consultation or warning. A body blow to writers and publishers forced to choose between a much-loved, community-oriented festival and a highly resourced metropolitan market opportunity. Cruel and unusual behaviour from MWF, smacking of the corporatisation of arts organisation boards. I know that Insta isn’t the place for politics, but seriously, cranky face emoji. 😡

The Booklist is a free weekly newsletter for book lovers from Jason Steger, Books Editor at The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald.
.
Containing literary gems and goss, it has fast become a highly anticipated newsletter that lands in our inbox every Friday.
.
In the latest edition, Jaye was asked to highlight 4 books she had recently been reading.
.
Her contribution follows:
.
“If you didn’t receive a copy of Paul McCartney’s ‘The Lyrics’ for Christmas, do yourself a favour and splurge. Together with the recent release of Peter Jackson’s Get Back, this is immersive, going-down-the-rabbit-hole stuff. Many happy hours will be lost.

Hanya Yanagihara’s long awaited new novel ‘To Paradise’ is as compelling and “can’t look away”, as A Little Life. Happy to report it is somewhat gentler although equally heart-wrenching.

Look out for the debut novels from home-grown award winners Mandy Beaumont and poet Omar Sakr. ‘The Furies’ and ‘Son of Sin’ are receiving well-deserved buzz for sensational storytelling and writing prowess. Both tell powerful, complex tales. Both stir and uplift.”

To subscribe to The Booklist, do a Google on Jason Steger + Booklist.
