LAUNCHING A BOOK TAKES BLOOD & GUTS! On Monday night, the rain fell in apocalyptic-style downpours, yet people came from across the city + county of Cork, from Tipperary, Dublin, Wexford, Wicklow, Louth, & UK to a free range pig farm just outside of Cork to help me celebrate the launch of my book! It was an evening that will be etched on my memory for the rest of my life - what a night! Was I nervous? No! Why? Because I had with me the dreamiest of dream teams! Peter & Kate of @glenbrookfarmcork not only provided the venue, but created a space that was welcoming + generous, just like them! @caitlinruthfood was in her element cooking up a plethora of canapes, each so different but linked by a soupcon of black pudding deliciousness. A genius in the kitchen! @brianswines poured incredible wines for my guests with the meagerest of input from yours truly! You can do that when you trust someone as much as I do Brian - ditto Caitlin! @bmg_sound came with his professionalism dialed up to 90! Perfect sound (PERFECT!), tunes, visuals & lighting to literally set the stage for me & my book! The ever brilliant @joleencronin who captured the night so gorgeously for me! I'm super awkward in front of the camera, but never with Joleen - a gem of a lady, always! @bibliocook lead the post-mingle fireside chat with questions that teased out the books' myriad themes + dived into my personal reasons for writing the book in her brilliantly curious & well-researched style. Brava! Finally, my visionary publisher, Kristin Jensen @9beanrowsbooks, who frankly took a gamble with saying yes to this book! But Kristin too understood why a book like Blood & Guts needed to exist in the world - and then trusted me to write it. We all need champions in our lives, and I am lucky to have had these people at my back for one of the best nights of my life! To everyone who came: Thank You! Your support means the world to me. Where would we be without our friends and of course our families... my family! My parents by blood & marriage; and my husband whose love and backing made it all actually possible; IRL as the kidz say! Let the adventure begin... #bloodgutsandblackpudding #booklaunch

TAKE ME TO MEXICO… Throwback to one amazing evening of food and gathering at Caitlin Ruth’s “Mexicanish” 3-Week Pop Up at the Glassbox @blacksbrewery in Kinsale! An 8-top of us (virtually unheard of - us all being available at the same time happens about once every two years!) landed and feasted on a bounty of flavours by @caitlinruthfood … The day before, @katymcguinness review of Caitlin’s pop up had just been published and it was a joy to read from start to finish. How can all this amazing food, prepared entirely from scratch - including chefs take on Tajin for the watermelon and the hot sauces on the table and in the drinks - be served up for €60?, she basically asked! How indeed? How is it that the best butter you’ve never yet tasted is the addictive flavour of Caitlin’s lime butter? The most perfect single bite of the Fish Taco (handmade tortillas) is the best fish taco ever? That the deeply savoury and pun-tastic “Kale-sadilla” that will always be one of my fave things this chef makes! Or the venison chorizo sope and that mushy pea guac? But no, @mjoneillbutchers lamb barbecao? Maybe the final adieu of the Tres Leche trifle which stunned the entire table into silence? This is food as celebration, and every damn mouthful is a trip to flavour town. Absolutely superb: in concept, execution and balance. I can’t explain these flavours, except to say that if you needed to remember what the point of being here is at all, it’s that these experiences exist and that food - this food particularly - is a magic spell for good living and happy times. For the friend in our group who is a plain eater, this was whole new territory, but not a morsel was left behind by even him! Testament to how darn good this chef, her food, and the team alongside her, are consistently putting out the best food around. Take me back to Mexico anytime you want, Caitlin. I am a willing and eager passenger! 🔥 Zero fucken notes, lad! #caitlinruthfood #popup #mexicanish #blacksbrewery #flavour

FLAVOUR & FLAIR… [ #invite ] A super fun way to spend an evening @montenottehotel Flavour & Flair event pairing a four-hands menu devised by TV’s @matt.tebbutt (and soon to be the new Masterchef co-presenter) and Montenotte’s Exec Head Chef @lovell622 Martin Lovell with bold cocktails created by spirits expert @cocktail.carmen . Kicking things off with a botanical G&T in The Glasshouse on a sunny early autumn evening complete with an array of finger-licking canapés. We then moved into the Gallery Suite where first we dined on a warm salad of Smoked Duck paired with a seasonal Verjus cocktail. Next, perfectly pan fried turbot with samphire and smoked mussels and a potato polenta cake. For this Carmen paired a super punchy Salt & Smoke Martini to mirror flavours on the plate. Desserts aren’t usually the star of the show for me, but this gorgeous Tarte Tatin with buttermilk and hazelnut ice cream and apple puree was so so good! Carmen knocked it out of the park with a gorgeous Clarified Apple and Irish Whiskey Milk Punch that slipped down nice and easy! Maybe a little too easy (!) and proving that you can pair cocktails with food - just takes a little imagination and a whole lotta skill! Because we wanted to take full arrange of those cocktails, Mr Flavour and I decided to stay at the hotel (we paid for that!), and enjoyed a hearty breakfast on a sunny morning, and after took full advantage of the gorgeous sunken gardens that frame one of the best views of the city, anywhere in the city. Thanks to @raykellehercork for creating a lovely evening, and great to share the table with @fashionablyfortyish @esthermccarthyread @jasryan and @bitsandbites.ie 🙌 Keep an eye out for future Montenotte Wine Club, pop up brunch and dining events - you won’t want to miss out! #montenotte #matttebutt #carmenoneal #supperclub #wineclub #socialdining #flavour #dinnerbuddies #purecork #tasteclub

HOMEMADE COMPOST! This is about 18 months old and made from nothing except kitchen scraps, eggs boxes, the odd bit of brown paper and some chopped up cardboard. The worms have done their amazing thing, and now we are left with this black gold that’s crumbly in texture and zero aroma except the good earth kind. @jasryan is the master of the compost bins, checking them to see if they need extra carbon. I’d like to also thank @barrysteagram @stonevalleyroasters and @westcorkeggs for their various contributions to this magic from tea leaves, coffee grinds and egg boxes! We use a three bin system of Carbery Plastic rotunda composters which makes it easy to turn. We have had these for many years now and are still perfect and have never had an infestation break into them. They and the compost they are making are absolute gold! #flavourhq #makeyourowncompost #blackgold #compost #goodearth #compostbins #slowfood #regenerativegardening

J THE BUIDER! Ok, it’s a bit long but there is more to this clip than just @jasryan cutting some corrugated with the angle grinder (hey, words are my strength, not this video malarkey!!) Live how he is so chuffed with himself - and rightly so! The first phase of this should be all done by tomorrow (all going well) so watch this space and I’ll check back in with a progress report! #jthebuilder #flavourhq #outdoorkitchen #powertools #buildingstuff

APPLE SCHNAPPS 🍎 After a tasty encounter with Apple & Strawberry Schnapps earlier in this year in Westport followed by a delivery of apples from the Ryan Family Orchard (5 trees in North Cork - don’t get too excited!) sparked an idea in Mr Flavour’s head for homemade Apple Schnapps. Three months of patience and today it was time to taste it. Lovely notes of sweet toffee apple, syrupy on the tongue and gently warming on the way down. Very lovely, and will make a tasty addition to our festive sips over Christmas! #appleschnapps #homemadebooze #festivetipple #flavour #mykitchen #mrflavour #schnapps #christmasdrinks

FUN WITH DIGGERS… Handy to be friends with someone who’s pure daycent with a mini digger! DM is making fantastic progress clearing the main path from the gate to Base Camp and where the sheds will be. We’ve been drawing trash from the site for three evening straight - seems for many a year, people have been throwing any old crap into the field. 😠 Next job is to rework the slope into three tiers. The first two tiers will be Base Camp and where we will put our first raised beds. The third will be where we put the polytunnel (next year’s job!). The big joy of this process is discovering that there is in fact soil here - lots of it, and it’s bloody lovely! Terracotta and crumbly with a smell of pure, natural, rich soil. I dug my hands into the mound that DM left for us to inspect tonight. You couldn’t buy this stuff. We are fortunate indeed! On the way back to home, another farmer friend of ours was unloading young calf bulls onto fresh pasture on the patch across the road from us. He said we should throw a few coins about the place so we can say that there was always money in that field. We told him about the soil; he said, I bet there’s a good smell off it? We said yes, and a look floated across his face which almost could have said “ye lucky bastards”, in the only way friends can. He also said that he was happy to see we had the field and what we were planning for it, rather than a bunch of houses go up on it. He also said, if I grow the spuds and the carrots, he’d bring the beef! I said we were planing garlic first, so if we could ask one of the dairy farmers on the other side for a bit of milk to whip into butter, we’d have the garlic butter to go with it! The thing that struck me about that conversation is the understanding and respect for the discovery of good earth; the farming folklore for preserving it, and that if we were deadly serious about the spuds, beef and garlic butter, between the two of us, we could feed the whole village. Also: a lad and his (borrowed-wishing-it-was-his) digger… #flavourhq #diggerman #goodearth #farmingfolklore #plottoplate #regenerativeagriculture #adventuresingrowing #herewegrow

POP UP WITH FRIENDS… Take a reunion with friends not seen for almost a year and sprinkle it with @caitlinruthfood take on seasonal Spanish x West Cork food and plonk it all in the friendliest spot of them all, @levis_corner_house_ballydehob . All you ever really need in life is good company and good food - if you have that, you are rich beyond measure. That the company is as obsessed about food as you are, and the chef that brings the food is also a great friend, makes me the richest - and happiest - person I know! I could also eat those Goat Empanadas for days! Ms Ruth does it again - well done doll!
