Interview with Jass Beki - 09/05/26

Jass is the muse for my latest portrait “Will My family Tree Remember Me?” exploring heritage, cultural influences, and legacy - we had to link up and talk about this one because a lot of thought and conversation went into it.

Jass is a nationally renowned, talented actor based in London having recently featured in the National theatre in ‘Dear England,’ the stage play by James Graham.

The mutual respect between us as creatives, although in different fields, led me to planning a portrait of Jass. It linked perfectly with my passion for bringing stories to the canvas and celebrating all art and culture.

My ideas went through many, many iterations before reaching the canvas, in fact, it was a whole year between discussing the concept and beginning the painting, with several phone calls and convos along the way.

Jass is congolese and i know they beat jamaica in world cup qualifying but i had to hear him out.

Highlighting his congolese roots in my portrait was important - because it’s important to him.

When i paint a story like this, it’s these influences and personal touches that i feel really bring it to life. I added congolese style patterns to the painting and cowry shells, bringing rich and deep history into the canvas...

the final portrait, 61x91cm

i set out to create my best work yet with this portrait 🤞🏽

we spoke about “legacy” and what we provide for the next generation, so it was fitting to add these older cultural and symbolic references to the portrait that represent what has been passed down.

I used a few photos as reference, sticking with one main image that i felt captured a sense of pride, strength, and focus, aligning with the ideas of this portrait.
