One of the most underrated things about Amasi is how versatile it is. We almost always use it for umphokoqo (a traditional Xhosa dish made with maize meal) or in scones. But lately I've started experimenting with different uses and I recently made this absolutely delicious Amasi & Herb Dressing to drizzle over my Mexican-inspired bowl. What a win! Please do try this at home 👩🏾‍🍳

Z O M E R L U S T

Paarl is happening on every level of hospitality right now. In fact, this magnificent town is redefining all things eat, sleep, drink, think, walk, talk, play, clay, create, paint, explore, meander and magic!

And it’s thanks to passionate visionaries like Wikus and Wayne who scooped up this old beaut of a property on Main Road dating back to 1792 and brought a dream team together to restore her back to her former glory.

They worked closely with Heritage to ensure every aspect of this 2ha property was preserved and celebrated. 15 rooms are meticulously styled, each with a unique theme and colour palette. Gardens boast 250-year-old Coral Trees and the hotel is also home to the first ladies bar in South Africa where your brandy balloon awaits; a nod to the days when Zomerlust operated a brandy distillery.

Bringing flame, flair and flavour to the hotel is acclaimed chef @chefkevingrobler with Smeul Restaurant where every dish is cooked on fire. T-bones are drenched in bone marrow butter, milk buns are fire stamped and served with smoked cultured butter, baby cabbages are grilled and textured with brown butter breadcrumbs, cauliflower risotto dressed up with dukkah and saffron foam, Kev’s legendary pork belly is a highlight and sweet endings look like coal-kissed soft meringue, pumpkin cheesecake with candied walnuts and pear chutney and chocolate semifreddo and mascarpone mousse.

Wikus and Wayne have created a stellar destination here in the Boland. It’s not just a stay, a visit, a meal or a glass of wine on the sun-drenched terrace… they have created an entire experience wrapped in tiny magical details and layers of warm hospitality from the moment you step inside off the busy Paarl streets. You’ll find it very hard to leave and I’m so excited that this goodness is on my doorstep and I can’t wait to show you!

The final days of the holidays spent well — Franschhoek, sunshine, long lunches and even longer conversations.
From Chef’s Warehouse at Maison to an unforgettable donburi at Yama, it was all about good food and better company.
Back to work now, but carrying the magic of those two beautiful days with me.
