25 years ago today, my son was born. What most people don’t know is that he almost didn’t make it … not because of any issues of health, but because of the hospital’s negligence.

During labor, Jaya flipped around in the womb (to this day I tell him he was doing capoeira in my belly -bc he was!)

The umbilical cord got wrapped around his neck and the nurses weren’t paying close enough attention to notice his heart rate drop.
Time was working against us by the time they noticed and the panic and frenzy ensued.

And as our story would have it, an angel appeared -a surgeon who happened to be covering at our hospital that day. A black doctor from Howard University. What were the odds!

Somewhere in the unfolding chaos, my mother (who, like too many women of color, had lost her first baby to the same lack of care) grabbed the doctor by the collar and told him he better not lose her first grand baby.

Defying the Clock and seemingly unbeatable odds, our angel rerouted and changed our entire course. I was to go under … and Under I went.
“My baby …” -the last words I cried while I was on this side …

Through the darkness of the worlds and the doors of Lions Gate, I traveled to get my baby.

Destiny sought us from the fires of dread, through the silence and the stars … and finally to his first breath.

Durjaya was meant to Live.

Difficult to Conquer he would forever be. Here to direct our lives with purpose and precious pause.
August 8, 2001. The day our lives began to revolve around our Sun.

I’m in awe to this day reflecting on the miracle God performed that day. And with each year, I grow more grateful and proud of the magical human I was blessed to mother.

On this special 8/8/8 Lions Gate, I cry, HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my beautiful baby who is now a full and flourishing man. My favorite person in the world is also who I get to call my son.

Happy bornday, Jaya Bean!

I will be here to protect, support, comfort, and celebrate you ~until my very last breath … and beyond.

Always.
