Great meet and greet with really thoughtful questions - always a pleasure to hear from Chicagoans what they want to see from the next mayor and to share how I want to work together to build housing, modernize government, and usher in a new era of bold, bright change for Chicago.

AND they got the memo: snacks, snacks, snacks!

Thank you Highwood Historical Society for the invitation to read and to talk about emigration and connections, and the connections between the stories of Houses With Names: The Italian Immigrants of Highwood, Illinois (1990), Openwork (2007), and Benefit Street (2022). It was a wonderful gathering. Thank you to all of those who were there.

first proofs.

my hybrid, book-length, essay, “The Ambiguity of the Hypotheses: Four Landmarks within the Tangles, Networks, and Knots of Gadda’s Pasticciaccio, is scheduled for publication in spring 2026 by Bordighera Press. The novel in question is Quer pasticciaccio brutto de via Merulana (That Awful Mess on the Via Merulana) by Carlo Emilio Gadda. The essay, selected for inclusion in the Robert Viscusi Essay Series, is part travelogue, memoir, family history, and literary analysis by a non-licensed philologist. A kind of crime novel told in a multitude of languages (dialect, Latin, Greek, argot, for example), it involves the entangled investigations around two crimes: the horrific murder of a woman and the armed robbery of her neighbor’s (a countess) jewelry. A central question: How did this horrible event happen? Set in the winter of 1927 in Rome, it is a novel about fascism.
