Set my first bolt the other night after another round of hand drilling practice. First time using a torque wrench, too!
I suspect the CMU material might be too soft for a wedge anchor as I couldn't seem to reach the 30 lb-ft target for the 1/2" bolt. I could tighten with a hand wrench, but the nut always came undone easily (by hand or light twisting of the wrench) and after a couple iterations of the two wrenches I saw that I managed to get about 1/2" of protrusion of the bolt shaft! Seems like it is backing out with just shear resistance and the wedge is failing to engage...

Wrapped up the day with a climb up Owl Rock in @archesnps. Thanks to @jaybrowyde for the lead and the summit pic! And thanks to my unknown friend in the parking lot who got the shot of me on the summit, captured my phone # while I shouted it down to him, then texted me the pic! Awesome view from the top! What a great day! 🙏

I guess you would call that a helluva week. Started by having to say goodbye to my sweet Bruno, my best buddy of 15 years. Then got my spirit recharged by spending a few days in my happy place. Saw some old friends and made some new ones. Thanks to all of you! Our lives are so fleeting in the fullness of time. Even the rocks we love to climb will crack and erode away. All of these cycles of life and we just ride along with the ripples in the enormity of it all. The rarity of it is what makes it so valuable. Savor every moment!

Castleton Tower is next on the hit list. I finally got knocked out of my depression. Damn this crap sucks. I’ve got some work to do to lose the weight again. My hip has been killing me. But I’ve flipped the switch and started my clean no sugar diet again. That should help with the inflammation and the hip pain. I’ve got a couple of weeks to whip myself into shape so I can climb with my friend JayBro. Pretty stoked as Castleton Tower has been on the list for forever. I longed to be over there while we were climbing “Line In The Sand” on The Cottontail Tower. I knew I would get there someday. Well that day is coming soon. Pic taken from “Line In The Sand” on the evening before we topped out. That was a cool night while Richard was in his mondo condo Portaledge watching a movie with headphones on I played the whole Rush 2112 album as the full moon rose over The Titan. It was a memory that won’t ever fade. Those are the best kind. - Plaid.

Start stretching those shoulders, @shantipack is teaching an Odub clinic this spring in Moab. Even if off-widths aren’t your thing, it’s amazing how often you find ways to use the techniques on routes not traditionally considered OW... chicken wings in Rifle, hand/fist stacks in Red Rocks. Plus you get to climb with her and two other legends @devinfin and @jaybrowyde (Jay Anderson). More info on her feed. .
