Midwest Art Review visited “HWD,” the 20th annual sculpture show at the Gallery at Rosewood Arts Center in suburban Kettering, Ohio. Juried shows tend towards over-stuffed hodgepodge. Rosewood’s are well curated, in part thanks to the guest jurors selected by the staff who are practicing artists themselves. Highlights include Summer Zickefoose’s “Across the Sea”, consisting of lo-fi clay binoculars with an iPhone slideshow playing at the barrels’ end. The eye pieces focus the digital images ontologically rather than through actual optics. Like the belly of a whale, you observe the cavern of the clay vessel — a hidden dimension to which one is usually not privy. Jason Lee, a professor at West Virginia University’s art college, reflects on the suburban landscape and subcultures of his childhood. “Gates of Steel” is made with shocking pink silicone rubber cast to resemble window shutters gone floppy over a conveyor belt. Shutters and fences are ubiquitous in the suburbs — objects that both open to and close out others. The piece works great in this community art center. Fingers-crossed we see more of Lee around here. Read the full review on Substack, and find out why I cried the first time I visited Rosewood, at the link in bio. Come see Let’s Meet in Our Dreams by Thomas Moberg & Jamie Weinfurter through August 23 at Artlink! As twilight sets in, we lose our ability to see color, and the world that we once knew becomes shrouded in wonder and otherworldly mystery. Let’s Meet in Our Dreams, the two-person exhibition featuring work by Thomas Moberg and Jamie Weinfurter combines nocturne oil paintings and Scollages (Sculpture + Collage) in a dimly lit space to evoke a sense of mystery and the desire to feel at home. The tension between interior and exterior spaces is shown through painted nocturnes that look in on illuminated homes from the outside with a sense of longing, and illuminated sculptures that evoke an uncanny and surreal sense of liminal space from within the home. Our nocturnal habits have changed dramatically over the last two centuries due to the advent of artificial light. Where we once used to sleep and rise with the rhythm of the sun, we are now untethered from that natural pattern; the feeling of wonder and mystery that we experience after dark is one of being out of place and time. This exhibition highlights our natural human desire for light, which has connotations as security, comfort, and warmth. These feelings are contrasted with the night, which we associate with anxiety, discomfort, and exposure to the cold. The voyeurism of looking in on private spaces is culturally taboo, which creates an emotional dissonance as we catch glimpses of well-lit interior spaces in the dark of the night. The otherworldly feeling of entering this exhibition will prompt viewers to question everyday objects and spaces and to celebrate the seemingly mundane. The nocturnes and Scollages within the light-controlled exhibition space will draw in viewers as “moths to the flame,” highlighting our shared desire to feel at home. @michiganstateu students participated in an iron pour at @ccs_detroit with other peers from Cranbrook Art Academy, the University of Michigan, and Wayne State University. These types of collaborative events help build a professional network of artists across the state of Michigan. Evan Yalowitz, an MSU Studio Art student and recent graduate, learned new metal casting skills at aluminum and bronze pours at MSU and at the CCS Iron Pour in Detroit. “Hands-on learning is super important, especially in the arts,” Yalowitz said. “There’s only so much that you can learn through lectures and through seeing it with your eyes. Actually getting in and getting your hands dirty is extremely important to the process.” @msu_aahd Assistant Professor Jamie Weinfurter finds experiences like the CCS Iron Pour offer students new ways to participate in learning and connect with a wider creative community across Michigan. “Making these processes more approachable to students and opening metal casting events to the public highlights the value of the arts and humanities through unforgettable creative and educational experiences,” Weinfurter said. Read more through the link in our bio or at cal.msu.edu/news. People in protective jackets, gloves, and helmets work together pour molten metal into molds in an industrial setting outside.

Today’s the Day! Please join us tonight from 5-8PM to support the artists behind our three new exhibitions, Let’s Meet in Our Dreams, Lucent, and Mirroring Reality! Everyone is welcome of all ages, there is no cost to attend, and we’ll have some snacks and a cash bar! Let’s Meet in Our Dreams Let’s Meet in Our Dreams is a two-person exhibition by Thomas Moberg and Jamie Weinfurter, featuring nocturne paintings and shadowed sculpture collages within a light-controlled space. The tension between exterior and interior space and the parallels of darkness and light are meant to draw in viewers like “moths to the flame,” highlighting our shared desire to feel at home. Lucent: The Art of Light In the words of James Turrell, “light is not so much something that reveals, as it is itself the revelation.” For Lucent, rather than just using lights to reveal artwork on our walls, we wanted the artworks to reveal light. Whether symbolically, metaphorically, or literally. Juried by Ellen Mensch, this exhibition includes 26 works created through a variety of media and with one shared focal point—light. Mirroring Reality: Realism Today Juried by Andrew Dubach, this group exhibition will highlight diverse interpretations of Contemporary Realism and explore how artists mirror, challenge, and reconstruct reality through representational imagery. #artlinkfw #light #exhibitions #fortwayne #artscampusfw

Why am I late to posting about my June? I've just been so busy living my July. ⁺˚⋆｡°✩₊ Last month, I received the incredible gift of being an invited artist-in-residence at @iparkct. It was my first experience in the AiR world and it truly became the one to beat. Here's a minuscule glimpse into work I tinkered with alongside my wildly badass/talented/supportive cohort. Much muuuch more stagnating in the editing bay - I might even let it out one day.
