POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Tonight at The Grapple Mill was one of those sessions that reminds us exactly why this place is so special.

The Gi session was run by myself tonight, with Luke Trevelyan stepping in to help with the No Gi. The atmosphere was brilliant, the mats were busy and everyone was putting in the work.

Over the last year, The Grapple Mill has been through a lot. Injuries, operations and everything that has come with trying to get back to full health have meant that I have not always been able to do what I normally do. During that time, people have stepped up in ways that go far beyond simply coaching a class.

Luke, Zach Lewis and Danny have put countless hours into the work behind the scenes, building websites, sorting things that most people will never see and doing the kind of work that keeps everything moving. Kris Leeson, Jayden, Saffron, Shibéal, Helen and so many others have given their time, energy, sweat and heart to this place.

At times when The Grapple Mill has barely been making anything and has simply been paying for itself, these people have continued to give everything because they believe in what we are building.

That is what makes The Grapple Mill different. It is not about one person. It is not about one coach. It is a collective. It is a team of like minded people who come together to get better, push each other and build friendships and bonds that go far beyond the mats.

Tonight we were also really happy to welcome our friend Rosie over from Madrid. We met Rosie several times over the years and she promised she would eventually come and train with us. Tonight she finally made it over and she will be training with us throughout the summer. It was brilliant to have her on the mats.

With Saffron’s Women’s Only course about to invite more women through the doors and lots of new faces becoming part of the gym, the dynamic at The Grapple Mill continues to grow.

There was a real buzz in the gym tonight.

This is The Grapple Mill.

More than a gym. More than a coach. A collective, a team and a community.

Thank you to everyone who continues to put their heart into this place. You know who you are.

New faces at Sparring Sunday at Fit2Fight - Great people make a great atmosphere 🙌🏽

If you’re sparring for your first time, you shouldn’t be going home with concussions. Hard sparring too early breaks more than it makes, especially for people new to combat sports 🥊

Why did Zach join The Grapple Mill?
“My dad forced me.”

Are you getting battered by a girl?
“Yes… but guess what? I love it.”

His final thoughts on Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
“Equal rights.”

No further questions. 😂

Poor Luke. People keep asking why he joined The Grapple Mill, expecting some inspirational answer about fitness, discipline, or self improvement. Truth is, Luke’s far more honest than most.

He joined because apparently there’s something deeply satisfying about rolling around with slightly knackered dads of three who are north of 40 and running purely on caffeine, ibuprofen, and unresolved back pain. That’s where he gets his kicks. Bit creepy? Maybe. Bit concerning? Possibly. But in fairness, he’s found his tribe. And at The Grapple Mill we don’t judge… much.

Whether you’re here to get fitter, learn to grapple, or suspiciously target exhausted middle aged fathers, there’s a place for everyone.

Need an escape from the daily grind? Just ask Lee while Lew is literally choking him out, he joked he joined because he wasn’t getting choked enough by his wife!

If you’re in need of a laugh, a sweat, and maybe a tiny bit of danger, come down to The Grapple Mill. We promise, the only thing getting choked harder than Lee is his excuses, come and see what all the fun is about!

Jayden and Ty 10 years ago - not sure what the drill was but they both lost 🤣🤣 look at em now 💪

NOBODY is a natural at this game, some have certain attributes that help, but without technique they are slightly better than absolutely awful.

Sticking to this game says something about you 🥋

(Pretty sure these live resistance drills got invented about 3 years ago btw) 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

Our adult classes at The Grapple Mill have been on fire this week!

We kicked things off Monday with Kris Leeson, diving deep into back control perfecting traps, submissions, and escapes.

Tuesday was all about the Gi with Josh, where we honed the Kimura trap system, crucifix entries, and control concepts. Wednesday, a smaller class, mixed Gi and NOGi, where we worked a slick modified Ezekiel choke from the back and gift wrapping techniques from Luke's class.

And tonight, Jayden Broad’s comp class, keeping the focus on back control as we hit week 7 of our 8 week curriculum. Let’s keep pushing, momentum is everything!

just have to say, the culture we have at The Grapple Mill is something I never could have imagined. It has grown so organically, from absolute beginners stepping onto the mats for the first time, all the way to students earning their colored belts, each one of them developing with grit and dedication. And what blows me away even more is that this gym, which started as just an idea, has become a real community. It’s no longer just mine; it belongs to everyone who walks through the door. They have taken ownership in a way that is humbling, students are building websites, they’re running social media, they’re handling admin work, they’re showing up and pouring their hearts into this place.

And it’s not because I asked them to; it’s because they love it, because they care, because this is theirs as much as it is mine. I can feel it in every class, every conversation, every little thing they do. And I truly believe that this culture we have here is second to none. I don’t think there’s another gym out there quite like us. And if there is, I would love to hear their story, because from where I’m standing, I haven’t seen anything more real, more powerful, more ours.

just have to say, so many gyms out there try to bring in other people’s purple belts, brown belts, and all that dedication from outside, but we have built this as a collective, from the ground up, together. Of course, the coaches have played a massive role in shaping this culture, but the truth is, nothing has changed. The core spirit, the way we care for each other, the way we grow, that has always been real. This is ours, from the first step on the mat to every single milestone we hit. And no matter how far we go, that truth stays the same.

This week, Jayden Broad wrapped things up with his nogi competition class and, like always, it wasn’t about being a “pro athlete” it was about getting better than you were last week. Regular people, busy lives, but still showing up and putting the work in. Jayden’s sessions are built around sharp, simple details that actually translate under pressure, whether you compete or not. Solid rounds, good energy, and a room full of people pushing each other without the ego. That’s what it’s about.

Jayden Broad ran the competition class last night at The Grapple Mill, closing out Week 2 of the syllabus focused on closed guard. No shortcuts, no easy rounds, just proper, honest work. Closed guard is one of those positions people think they understand until the pressure goes up, and last night exposed that in the best way. Breaking posture, controlling distance, attacking with intent, and staying disciplined when things don’t go your way. That’s where the growth is. The room kept a high pace from start to finish, and you could see people starting to connect the details instead of just going through motions. That’s the difference. Week 2 wrapped up how it should be, pressure tested, sharpened through competition rounds, and setting a standard that doesn’t change depending on who’s in the room.

Next week we move into Week 3, shifting focus to half guard. Different problems, different battles. It’s a position that forces you to deal with pressure, timing, and patience. No hiding in half guard, you either understand it or you get flattened. Looking forward to seeing the room step into that and build on what’s already been laid down.

At The Grapple Mill, we’re more than just a Brazilian Jiujitsu gym we’re a family bound by a culture of support, dedication, and belief in each other. I founded this gym, but while I’ve been out recovering from surgery, something incredible has happened. Our students and coaches have kept this spirit alive, stronger than ever not because of me, but because they believe in something bigger. Unlike gyms driven by ego, we’re driven by a collective passion no one is left behind, and everyone rises together. Come see what a real culture of Jiujitsu feels like. This is The Grapple Mill.

Three years ago The Grapple Mill started with a simple idea. Build something real. A place where people could come together, train hard, support each other, and grow both on and off the mats. What has happened since then has been completely organic.

We have never poached students from other gyms and we never will. The people who train here chose to be here and that means everything. Over the last three years we have built something far more important than just a gym. We have built a brotherhood and a sisterhood of like minded people who genuinely want to see each other succeed.

When you walk into the room you can feel it. People lift each other up. Beginners are welcomed. Experienced athletes share their knowledge. Everyone pushes each other to get better while still keeping that sense of respect and humility that martial arts should be built on.

We have worked hard to make this a place for everyone. From our female classes, to bringing in high level athletes and instructors whenever we can, to constantly trying to create opportunities for our team to learn and grow. We do not look at everything through the lens of money. We look at what is best for the community and for the people who trust us with their training.

Tonight after another great competition class we looked around the room and saw just how far this team has come. A room full of people who are developing, improving and standing together. That is what The Grapple Mill is about.

Three years in and we are only getting started. Thank you to every single person who has stepped on the mats with us and helped build what this place has become. The future is going to be special. 💪🥋
