.
There’s always something exciting about walking into a world premiere.
.
There’s an added sense that nobody really knows what’s about to happen.
No audience has lived with the piece before. No performance has become the definitive version.
Every laugh, every silence and every emotional beat is discovered together for the very first time.
.
This evening’s invitation to the finale came courtesy of Juliet Barry at @MobiusTheatre, giving TheHumbleHost🎩👓 the opportunity to experience @HitMachineLondon at @SohoTheatre before sharing my thoughts.
.
I’ll admit, one of the main draws for me was the opportunity to see more of director @DanielBailey ’s work.
Having established himself as one of the most exciting directing talents currently working in British theatre, DB deservedly received widespread acclaim for Red Pitch, which transferred from the Bush Theatre to the West End, earning him The Stage Award for Best Creative West End Debut 💪🏾
.
TheHumbleHost🎩👓 crew is already booked to see his forthcoming production of August Wilson’s Fences at the Lyric Hammersmith this October (shout out to @MadelineAppiahOfficial), so this felt like the perfect opportunity to experience another chapter in what is becoming a very impressive body of work.
Sidebar - I attended with my friend @SharleneWhyte, and an impromptu reunion ensued directly post-show when we bumped into Daniel. Serendipitous.
.
Written by acclaimed playwright & screenwriter @JonTheCaren, Hit Machine received its world premiere on 8th July from Spiral Stairs Entertainment and BPM Theatrical, with producers @Kater_Gordon & @Jab2109 at the helm in association with Soho Theatre.
.
@JamesSteelProd ’s production boasts original music from 3-time GRAMMY Award-winning singer-songwriter @BenHarper, whose soulful style felt like a natural fit for a story centred around music, memory & emotional truth. Salute @CJFouram on music duty too.

I am absolutely blessed and grateful to have my stage debut at such an incredible venue, performing a touching play about Prince Jones written by his friend, the late great Chadwick Boseman.

It was a journey with many ups and downs that stretched me to my absolute limits but through God and those who love and support me I have been able to not only overcome but exceed my own expectations.

I have left this project not only as a better performer and person but also with a new family!

Can't wait to work with them again in the wild.

DEEP AZURE I LOVE YOU! ❤️

A moment that will live forever. History. Legacy. What an honour it has been to share the stage with the most talented, genuine, and hilarious group of superstars.

We’ve shared memories that will last a lifetime, inspired so many night after night on that stage, battled through trials and tribulations together, laughed, cried, Zowwww’d, and even hit a lil candy or two. Through it all, we stood beside one another — and I can truly say I’ve found family here.

What an honour it has been to pray together before every show. What an honour it has been to say Chadwick’s name after every performance.

Deep Azure will live on — for Prince Jones, for Chadwick Boseman, for all of us.

Thank you, God.

Deconstructing ‘Mother’

Musical Director and Composer
Deep Azure by Chadwick Boseman at the @the_globe is over!

This is the music I wrote for the show, which was co written with @aminitafrancis and obviously @chadwickboseman . I thought I’d share some rehearsal footage and the ways in which music is developed and devised in the process. It was also used in the official trailer.

Big up the cast and creatives!
I shall try and tag everyone here!

WE MADE HISTORY!
Made my stage debut @the_globe Sam Wanamaker Playhouse with these beautiful people.

There are not enough words for the gratitude and love I feel for this production.

Black voices coming together from both sides of the Atlantic.

I know Chadwick is smiling. Thank you to the Boseman family. Prince Jones. And everyone who came out and supported our show. This was not only a win for Black theatre, but for the culture.

@tristanfaiduenu —you are truly a visionary, a generational talent. Thank you for turning a lifelong dream into reality.

To my cast, ensemble, and creative team—I love you all.

I’ll forever be drifting and dreaming in an Azure mood.

This isn’t the end—it’s only the beginning for Deep Azure.

We made history, baby.

Let’s go.

Legacy. Legacy. Legacy. #deepazure 📸 @srtaylorphotography
