“For whosoever will save his life shall lose it, and whosoever will lose his life for My sake shall find it.”b- Matthew 16:25

I find myself repeating that bit of advice to all my kids leaving on their missions because it had such a massive impact on me when I was leaving for mine.

Before I’d left I was a mess. Nearly flunked out of college. Wasn’t sure I wanted to go but saw my friends who didn’t stuck in a kind of arrested development that I wanted to avoid.

I knew that if I let the moment pass I’d never truly take the time to develop my own faith or foundation. So I made the leap having no real understanding of the gospel or no real plan, just a trust fall that the Lord could make more of my life that I presently could.

To say that promised was delivered on would be a massive understatement.

I came back from 2yrs of service a completely changed person. From academic probation to the deans list. From scattered boy to focused man. It changed me because I wanted and needed change. I have seen it in my own life and have seen it in my others kids who’ve done the same.

Lose yourself and you might just be surprised at how much more you can become.

Last week @jayfayrob started her 18mo. Mormon mission to Peru. She’s the 4th of the 5 kids to serve a mission and it’s been something she’s wanted to do ever since she was 10 years old. It’s been a huge blessing to have her in our home while she spends a few weeks preparing to leave for the next year and a half.

It’s nearly impossible to fully prepare for a mission. The time sounds so long but flies by. It’s a refining experience that most who finish measure their lives by- pre and post mission.

We’re incredibly proud of her decision to serve and are savoring the last week we’ll have with her before she leaves us for the next year and a half.

Feel free to hit us with question for her on the comments and we’ll try to answer as many as she can before she leaves!
