“When women support each other, incredible things happen.” We definitely saw that firsthand last night at our Sip, Style, & Soirée event at @wickedbarleybrewing! It can be intimidating to walk in a fashion show when it’s not something you normally do or have ever done in your life, and we had moms cheering each other on and encouraging one another. It was a beautiful thing to see! There were moms that came alone hoping to make a new friend and we got to see those connnections happen ❤️ Such a wonderful night! Thanks to all the boutiques that participated— @jaffisboutique, @figandwillowboutique, and @lulamaestyle, @momnijax, and @andernicolle! Thanks to our vendors—@thedrybar Jax, @couturejems, @cwmakeup, @larrocdental, and @hellofresh! Vicky and I (Megan Kilis, Co-Owner of Jax Moms Blog) have been reflecting on International Women’s Day and thinking about how grateful we are to have a team of strong, supportive, courageous women who share their hearts, their parenting journeys, and sometimes their difficult personal stories with our community. We do this in the hope of better understanding each other, respecting that we make different choices for our families, and realizing that we don’t all have to believe the same things. Instead, we just need to listen to and respect one another, because when women support one another, incredible things happen. This supportive network is what Jacksonville Moms Blog is all about. A comment by JMB team member Candace Curry reflects the essence of this organization; when asked what she loves about JMB, she replied, “My favorite thing about the team is how loving, diverse, and open the individuals are. Groups of women tend to be very messed up (or maybe I'm over-generalizing), and it's not often that a group of women of different sexual orientations; world views; and ideas of fun, race, class, etc., can get along and do meaningful things. For me, the JMB team is a true agent of hope, change, and healing in this city, state, country, and hopefully world.” This is the true heart of JMB and we’re grateful to all of readers to come along this ride with us. It was January 2017. The new year was ripe with opportunity and I was excited to tackle a long list of goals for @citymomsblog when I received our 2016 reader survey results. One statistic stopped me in my tracks. 89% Caucasian. This was a problem. A MEGA-HUGE problem. You see, the world isn’t 89% Caucasian. . Motherhood is not 89% Caucasian. . Business is not 89% Caucasian. . We needed to do something. Now I wish that simply acknowledging the problem was enough but we are now a year past receiving this statistic and just scratching the surface of actually doing something to intentionally support, welcome and embrace moms of all ethnicities. The truth is, we live in a time when we are confronted with the complex realities of Race and racism everyday; however, there is so much reluctance to address the subject because it’s an uncomfortable topic. Well, not me. I believe that uncomfortable topics remain uncomfortable when they remain inside of our minds and hearts rather than out on the table. So we are leaning in and throwing it out on the table. We are talking Race and Inclusion in Motherhood. This week’s #justaddsprinkles Podcast with @jayfergiefiles is the first step of many for me and @citymomsblog where we embrace the topic of diversifying our voice and continuing to build a network that supports ALL moms.
