📖 Book: Nemesis by Agatha Christie

This past year I have really enjoyed reading one Miss Marple novel every month, in chronological order. The first time I encountered these stories was in my 20s, when I purchased/borrowed copies somewhat haphazardly and read them at random. Although this clearly didn't impact my enjoyment of the books (each one can be read as a standalone), it was really nice to park myself in St. Mary Mead and go through every Marple in order! Even when life got busy, this was an "easy challenge" that I was able to stick with throughout the year.

Thank you to @readwithjamie and @jaylamm.reads for hosting this challenge with the #QueensofMystery group. Although I missed most of the chats, I was with you all in spirit. 😄

Since I'm already feeling a touch sad to say goodbye to one of my favorite sleuths, I'm planning to reread the Marple short stories in 2023. I have my eye on The Tuesday Club Murders (a.k.a. The Thirteen Problems) for January!

#coffeeandcurrentlyreading - Birthday shoutout to @thelittlereadingmermaid , who started this tag! Hope you are having a great birthday week!

Looking forward to the discussion today with the #queensofmystery @readwithjamie and @jaylamm.reads of this book What Mrs McGillicuddy Saw by Agatha Christie. It was originally published in the UK as 4:50 from Paddington. It is a great little mystery featuring Miss Marple with lots of red herrings and suspects. QOTD: Have you ever taken a train? The last train I took was to Sevilla before the pandemic. #bookstagram #booksbooksbooks #mystery #agathachristie

#MysteryMonday #MissMarpleMonday

This was going to be a #coffeeandcurrentlyreading post, but since it's after dinner, it became an ice cream cone and currently reading (and yes, I purposely matched my cone to the book).

My journey through the Marpleverse continues, one Miss Marple book per month. June's pick is Murder with Mirrors (a.k.a. They Do It with Mirrors), pictured here in this Pocket Books edition from 1973. Although I didn't read it in time for the #QueensofMystery chat led by @readwithjamie and @jaylamm.reads , I'm thankful to be squeezing it in before the end of the month!

If you've read any amount of Christie, you can't help but compare Miss Marple to Hercule Poirot. One notable characteristic of Poirot is his conceit, which is in sharp contrast to the more humble Marple. While reading and thinking about this, a particular interaction stuck out to me:

☆☆☆

"My, Jane," said Mrs. Van Rydock, "you've got a lot of confidence in yourself, haven't you?"

Miss Marple looked faintly reproachful.

"You have confidence in me, Ruth. Or so you say ... I can only assure you that I shall endeavor to justify your confidence."

☆☆☆

Can you imagine if that were said to Poirot?? He would have simply twirled his mustache and declared, "I am Hercule Poirot!"

QOTD: If you were killed tomorrow, which detective would you prefer to investigate your murder: an overlooked, but shrewd, older lady, or a self-important, but clever, older man? (In other words, would you choose Marple or Poirot?)

I’m getting a head start on #MurderMonday with Sleeping Murder, Miss Marple’s last case. This was the April selection for the #QueensofMystery buddy read with co-hosts, @readwithjamie and @jaylamm.reads
⁣
I wanted to read Sleeping Murder because of the fascinating backstory. According to agathachristie.com, she wrote the book 30 years before it was published. She wrote it during WWII and stored it away in a bank vault for safekeeping until it was finally published.⁣
⁣
Sleeping Murder is the story of Gwenda and Giles who move into their new home. Mysterious things start happening and Gwenda turns to Miss Marple to help unravel the mystery. This book had a lot of twists and turns, but I have to brag that I did figure it out about halfway through the book.⁣
⁣
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and recommend it to all Agatha Christie and Miss Marple fans. ⁣
⁣
The #QueensofMystery buddy read will take on A Murder is Announced for our May read. If you are interested in joining us, please DM either Jamie or Julia.⁣
⁣
💬I love watching the movie/television adaptation after I finish an Agatha Christie book. Have you watched any Agatha Christie adaptations? Any you recommend? ⁣
