A couple reminders… maybe ones that I need to hear 🫶🏻 (with help from @jaylynrae_ )

One time, there was this boy. We were set to go on a date, but I had been in the ER until the early morning hours. I apologized and asked if I could rain check. Instead of rescheduling, he picked me up, went through the chicfila drive through, and sat on the couch with me. A few weeks in, I realized my health had taken a turn for the worse. Moving home was inevitable. I felt in that moment, that ending our relationship was the best thing to do. How could I possibly subject someone to my situation? How could I ask someone to voluntarily love and support me through this? It’s would be so unfair of me to continue getting close to him knowing my future may be short, knowing the rest of my life would be filled with hospital stays and constant pain. So, I told him that I needed to figure out myself, before I could have a boyfriend. I knew that he was hurt, I too was upset over it. However, we were able to move forward as friends. Several months later we had a deep talk. He asked me to be honest with him about why I ended things. So I told him the before mentioned reasons. His response was something that sticks with me still today. He said something along the lines of, “But attie, you decided that for me.” And he was right. I made the decision that my health was too much for him. I had to ask myself why? Is it a trauma response to being told my health was too much for someone? Or is it the lies that you tell yourself when you have chronic illness? I think it’s a little bit of both. Chronic illness seeps into every part of your life. It goes so much deeper than just the physical symptoms. 50% of the battle we face is mental.

If you have chronic illness, let people make their own decisions. It will be clear what they decide early on. If you care for someone with chronic illness, thank you, it is not easy. The best thing you can do is educate yourself on their illness and needs.
