What an absolute gift last week was. ✨I was able to take my father AND my boys to a place that I adore, the natural shores of Ocracoke Island, NC. This is a place in our country with a legendary past as "the graveyard of the Atlantic." Blackbeard's own backyard, with epic historic accounts of battles and whole fleets being lost to the tricky currents, sandbars and wild, deep seas that surround this sliver of an island. Parts of this island remain, untouched, where black creeks host shellfish and minnows and the waterways seem to change with the tides... As an art student at #eastcarolinauniversity , my friends and I would hop the ferry to escape our big campus in a small city. Self discovery, art making and a dip in the fresh, clear sea drove us, barefooted, down the ancient shell covered sandy path, Howard Street... oak aches concealing beach cemeteries. Graves from the 1800's, honored with coins atop the worn marble... This time, I came to show my family, my dad and his grandsons, the ancient maritime history, the clear blue and the uniqueness of land without people. Different color palette from the city of Charlotte. Apuamarine. Lime. Bone. Produce stand to fresh catch. Living simply. In love with the land and sea, the sky, the gifts. The shrimp, the breeze, the shells we brought home. But mostly. The memories. The snapshots, the "I love you's" and "I'm sorrys" and "thank yous." The cycles and smiles and struggles of a family enjoying different phases of life, living our own, pondering eachother's... Thank you @jaymorrow26 for being my adventure sponsor all of my life! 😆🫶🏼💗 for encouraging me to embrace and learn about that which is unfamiliar. Mostly for making the journey with us. You're a true champion.
