@minangelstudio and I have curated work for the Lucas Room at Bell House as part of the Dulwich Festival. We have been able to work with some wonderful painters - thank you all.

‘Breaking Glass’
Painting as surface and window, freedom and transgression.

Bell House, 27 College Road, London SE21 7BG

May 13/14 and 20/21 11am-6pm

PV May 12, 6-8pm all welcome 🥂

‘’Breaking Glass’ is one of five exhibitions in Bell House, Dulwich featuring the broader theme of Windows and Thresholds. With a nod to the new Berthe Morisot show at Dulwich Picture Gallery, Curator/Artists Kim Thornton, Sarah Sparkes and Jane Miller, Ky Lewis, Lucy Bainbridge, Min Angel and Jo Mason take over Bell House and consider windows and thresholds as barriers symbolic of separation and division or portals of opportunity.

Reflecting on the psychological spaces of our environments, ‘Breaking Glass’ features works by Min Angel, Julie Caves, Pippa Gatty, Jo Mason, Hannah Murgatroyd, Alice Neave, Daniella Norton, Alix Philippe, Jayne Anita Smith and Jacqueline Utley.

In considering the interface of the internal/external, the show references historical female representations, ideas of the feminine, the spiritual and the transcendental. Each painter has their own dialogue with painting’s history and language knowing that, for them, painting is itself both surface and window, freedom and transgression.’

This painful orbit, 2022. Acrylic and oil on prepared paper.
LAST DAY
Jayne Anita Smith’s show “A Fragile State” is open today from 1 pm - 5pm at Barbican Arts Group Trust’s ArtWorks Project Space 114a Blackhorse Lane E17 6AA.

Jayne is from Halifax and it is great to see work by artists based outside of London in our space.

Jayne Anita Smith is an abstract figurative artist whose paintings are born from automatic drawings produced on an intimate scale in oil paint. Smith uses these first, primitive marks, as a pathway to connect to the subconscious, to her internal voices. From these first raw brushstrokes, the tentative figurative forms start to emerge and claim their presence.
