Happy anniversary to American Pie 2, released 20 years ago today! Comedy sequels can be hard to get right but American Pie 2 succeeds on the goodwill of a likable ensemble cast that we have grown to root for since the first film. The film lacks the freshness of the original and the women, minus Alyson Hannigan, aren't given too much to do but the film's heart is in the right place & that has honestly been the driving force behind all the main films in this franchise. Are you a fan of American Pie 2? Sound off! In the meantime, here are some fun facts about the film:
.
.
1. Seann William Scott improvised some of his dialogue, this can be observed by his castmates' reactions in some scenes, such as when he tells Jessica he wants to know how many women she has slept with that year - Natasha Lyonne's amused reaction is genuine.
.
.
2. Fearing typecasting, Shannon Elizabeth declined to perform a nude scene for this sequel.
.
.
3. The movie originally included scenes featuring Stifler's dad (played by Chris Penn). These were removed after negative reaction in test screenings.
.
.
4. Nadia's first scene was actually shot in downtown LA, not New York. The World Trade Center towers were composited into the skyline. Yellow cabs and hot dog vendors were added for effect.
.
.
5. Producer Craig Perry stated while promoting American Reunion that John C. McGinley auditioned for the role of Stifler's Dad (a part that was eventually cut from the finished film) and Ashlee Simpson auditioned for the role of Christy.
.
.
6. J. B. Rogers, who served as the director of this film, also served as the first assistant director on the first film.
.
.
7. The first rehearsal with director J.B. Rogers was at a strip club in LA.
.
.
8. Eddie Kaye Thomas was laughing so hard at Seann William Scott's antics during the lesbian scene that he had to be cut out of a lot of the shots. This is why these scenes contain a lot of shots of just Stifler and Jim, even though Finch is supposed to be standing right next to them.

Happy anniversary to The Descent, released 15 years ago yesterday in the U.S. The biggest strength of The Descent is that it raises the tension to an all-time high before we even see the monsters lurking in the caves. The film is a suffocating and claustrophobic experience that exhausts you in the best way with its tight atmosphere before all hell breaks loose as the film races to its conclusion. It's honestly one of the best horror films of the last 15 years and it still holds up today. Are you a fan of The Descent? Sound off! In the meantime, here are some fun facts about the film:
.
.
1. The "crawlers" were designed to resemble Nosferatu from the film Nosferatu (1922). They also had huge white eyes to begin with, but this idea was done away with because they looked too silly. It took three and a half hours in makeup to transform an actor into a "crawler." They had to shave off their body hair as well.
.
.
2. The filmmakers considered it too dangerous to film in an actual cave. It also would have been far too time-consuming, so they opted to build one instead.
.
.
3. The appearance of the creatures was kept secret from the cast members until the first scene in which they encounter them was filmed. When the cast were finally filming the scene where the girls encounter the crawlers, the girls were genuinely scared and screamed the building down, running off set and laughing.
.
.
4. The jokey production name given during filming was "Chicks with Picks."
.
.
5. 21 separate caves were built for this film.
.
.
6. At director Neil Marshall's insistence, all the people playing the villainous "crawlers" were professional actors rather than stunt men or dancers. He wanted them to cultivate a distinct character for their crawler, although, in the finished film, many crawlers only appear for a few seconds.
.
.
7. The actors among the female rock-climbing crew and the actors who played the cave-dwellers were largely kept separate from each other through the shoot (including at lunch), heightening their ability to play animosity against the "other cast."
.
.
8. Production was fast tracked to beat the release of the similarly themed, The Cave.

News Reelz: Scarlett Johansson may be proud of most of her Marvel journey but when it comes to Iron Man 2, she has some choice words about how she was portrayed in the film.
.
.
In an interview this week with "Collider", Johansson began by noting that her character has evolved over the years and part of that has been due to her own evolution as a person and an actress. Then she stated "All of that is related to that move away from the kind of hyper-sexualization of this character and, I mean, you look at Iron Man 2 and while it was really fun and had a lot of great moments in it, the character is so sexualized, you know? Really talked about like she’s a piece of something, like a possession or a thing or whatever — like a piece of ass, really. And [Tony Stark] even refers to her as something like that at one point… ‘I want some’ [says Tony] … and at one point calls her a piece of meat and maybe at that time that actually felt like a compliment. You know what I mean? Because my thinking was different. Maybe I even would have, you know, my own self-worth was probably measured against that type of comment or, like a lot of young women, you come into your own and you understand your own self-worth. It’s changing now. Now people, young girls, are getting a much more positive message, but it’s been incredible to be a part of that shift and be able to come out the other side and be a part of that old story, but also progress.”
.
.
She isn't entirely wrong here. The character isn't given much depth to speak of in that film as herself & Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury are shoehorned in to begin setting up in The Avengers. To give an example of Johansson's point, one scene, an undercover Natasha spars in a boxing ring with Tony’s assistant/bodyguard Happy (Jon Favreau) and quickly takes him down. Afterward, she asks for Tony’s fingerprint on a document. As Tony watches her walk away, he tells Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) “I want one,” and Pepper replies, “No.”
.
.
The character has certainly evolved beyond this & that's thanks to Johansson's input & different writers giving her more layers.
.
.
Do you agree with her? Sound off!

REELZ QUESTION: DOES THE GODZILLA VS. KONG BOX OFFICE INDICATE A RETURN TO FORM FOR MOVIE THEATERS?
.
.
Godzilla Vs. Kong opened to an impressive 5-day gross of $48.5M which is solid for a few reasons. The film is available to stream on HBO Max & movie theaters are still restricted in terms of capacity. Most are at 25% but Los Angeles County can go up to 50% today so things are only going to get better hopefully.
.
.
Godzilla Vs. Kong has already grossed $285M+ globally and that's on a $200M budget. There is still some ways to go to be truly profitable but it's in a much better spot than films like Tenet or Wonder Woman 1984. Imagine how well the film would've done if it wasn't on HBO Max. The box office tells me that people are willing to go back to the movies if the film feels like an event but I want to hear your thoughts. Does this bode well for future theatrical releases? Does this offer more hope for movie theaters? Sound off!

REELZ QUESTION: WILL YOU BE SEEING THE NEW MUTANTS THIS WEEKEND?
.
.
THE NEW MUTANTS HAVE FINALLY ARRIVED! After a series of delays, a film that was completed three years ago will see the light of day & to go along with what seems Iike its cursed progress, the film opens during a global pandemic when theaters are steadily reopening after being shuttered since March. At this point we just want to see if this film is good or bad but given its current rotten score of 20% based on 20 reviews counted, this might be a stinker. That being said, I'd love to know if you'll be seeing The New Mutants this weekend & where you'll be seeing it. For instance, I'm in Los Angeles and our indoor theaters are still closed. I'd have to go about 45 mins away to catch it at the closest drive-in. What are your options? Is it worth the trip? Sound off!

Happy anniversary to Red Eye, released 15 years ago today! For me, Red Eye is one of Wes Craven's most underrated thrillers & the tension he builds while the action is taking place on the plane is palpable. A lot of the credit goes to Rachel McAdams & Cillian Murphy who carry the film with their extremely committed performances. The movies loses some steam once the action moves off the plane but build up is so good that you can forgive some minor issues with the film's climax. Are you a fan of Red Eye? Sound off! In the meantime, here are some fun facts about the film:
.
.
1. Cillian Murphy wanted the role of Jackson so badly that he took a plane from England to Hollywood two days before his wedding to have lunch with Wes Craven. Craven later gave him the part saying that his eyes won him over.
.
.
2. The pen used in this movie has a monster on the end of it. In the original script, it was a pen with Bart Simpson on it, but since they couldn't get the rights to use it, they had to settle with the monster.
.
.
3. Wes Craven got married in the middle of shooting.
.
.
4. This film was written for Sean Penn and Robin Wright. However, Wes Craven opted for younger leads.
.
.
5. The entire airplane set was built on hydraulics so when turbulence was called for in the script, the set actually shook from side to side.
.
.
6. The trailer deliberately starts off like a romantic comedy before revealing itself to be a thriller.
.
.
7. Although rare in Hollywood, Carl Ellsworth (first time feature writer) was the only screenwriter to work on this script. He claims he kept expecting to be replaced at any moment but was kept on until the film was finished shooting.
.
.
8. Originally allotted $44M, the movie's budget was later cut back to $25M.
.
.
9. Actresses that were considered for the role of Lisa included Neve Campbell, Amanda Peet, Rachel Weisz, Robin Wright, Jennifer Connelly and Claire Danes.
