This one sits close to my heart.

Last night I attended the official opening of 360 Queen Street. My final project before taking the leap from practising architect to business owner.

I’m incredibly grateful to @blightrayner for the opportunity to be part of leading this 33-storey premium office tower, from early tender through to the delivery of the lobby and documentation of the tower. Even more so to have worked alongside a team whose passion, determination and commitment never wavered; bringing a project of this scale and calibre to life is no small feat. We joked last night that it was like we were standing inside the Revit model, it felt so surreal to fly around in and out of the tower on the computer for so many years and then to be physically standing inside. This is my opinion probably the best part of being an architect. @jaysonblight @mj_sk @georgiec91 @james_mcd @arlynmangabat @orch.itect @madsthompson__ @japeleno @annalisewhite_ + Daniel Kalf!

Touring the new Glasshouse Theatre was a sensory delight for me as an architect. Every detail, every junction, every transition of material reveals the level of thought and discipline that goes into great architecture.

The detailing by @blightrayner and @snohetta is truly world-class. Nothing feels accidental; each moment carefully balances building code, craft, and design intent.

From the subtle shift in floor finishes at the entry, where a higher slip rating is required; sandblasted stone transitions quietly into a brushed surface, to the beautifully curved stone skirting wrapping the bar, every move feels deliberate. The off-form concrete speaks to the heritage of the site, while the theatre verandah gently encloses the space and ties the old and new together.

Our tour was guided by Keith, who has worked with Queensland Performing Arts Centre for over twenty years. You could feel the excitement and pride he has in seeing this new addition to Queensland’s arts scene come to life.

What people don’t always see in a finished building is the immense coordination, negotiation, and relentless attention to detail required by the design team to achieve architecture of this calibre.

A quiet nod to architects everywhere whose efforts in the executing a building at this level is difficult to portray to those who aren’t in the industry. This level of craft is the culmination of passion, determination and expertise which will be appreciated by generations to come.

Who Inspired / Inspires me ?

Early on in my career I knew nothing and relied on anything I could find including books and magazines relating to architectural photography. I’d considered doing a commercial photography course but instead spent the same amount of money on reading materials and film and just practised until I got it right. I remember using the Hills hoist in the backyard covered in clothes pegs to practice my focusing techniques and depth of field. Enter Julius Schulman and @JohnGollings. I came across some magazine articles about both of their work and found a few books written by JS. To me these two gents and their work epitomised architectural photography. JS’s ability to carefully curate a scene with human scale and authentic activation and JG’s ability to use powerful perspective and minimal image count to describe a building. If I could somehow blend the abilities of both then I would be off to a decent start in setting the ground work to refine my own approach and style to architectural photography. Today it’s no so much the work of a photographer but their approach to the craft and their business knowledge that inspires me. We get to a point where our style is deeply etched into our process but there is always room to move in improving the way we go about selling it.

I also get inspired by design professionals who dare to be different. In a world that relies on aspirational images from others rather than original content I love to photograph projects that dare to push the boundaries of both aesthetics and functionality. I think we get too engrossed about what is the current trend and style and forget about doing something that makes us unique. At the end of the day it is our client that the work has to cater for not a short lived trend.
