adjectives are always disappointing when used to categorize. try- instead, to use them to describe. once again you may find that the map is not the territory!

Today marks 5 years of Bernhardt’s, and wow has it ever taken more than a few starts, stops and pivots over the years to make it here. What started as a modest rotisserie with a big love for vegetables turned into a whole community of people that continually make us laugh, roll our eyes, and reminisce. From our humble beginnings to the little machine it is today, Bernhardt’s has been a true labour of love founded on personal hospitality and simplicity, and in many ways the favourite child.

From Dan with Kona Big Waves, the Land Cruiser trunk dinners and Shambu, into Max, our yes-man with his big heart hospitality and moves, there has been many eras. There was the legendary back patio (R.I.P.) that guests still request, the summer of rum yummies, many staff romances, shattered guest phones, milk-crate tables, janky umbrellas in a storm, and hot toddies to go. Takeout through the bleakest COVID winter months, basement poker games, baby Lucia cellar naps, more than a few notable paranormal incidents, and a massive wine fridge explosion. We’ve been both blessed and cursed in the many seasons, high and low, of Bernhardt’s.

To all our staff members past and present, thank you. To the families, couples, lovers, buds, critics, the many regulars and everyone in between, thank you. Lots of love for the current reign of Virgo queen Hannah & the ever modest chef Liam. Special mentions for our busboy to AGM Jaz, and our treasured staff mascot, the low-brow legend Clare.
