The Civil Rights Movement marked a singular message of hope for equality and freedom for people of colour in the United States.

However, the movement suffered trials by tyranny and systemic oppression, marked by transformational events such as the assassinations of Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X and Fred Hampton, and profound levels of police brutality and Black disenfranchisement.

Through and beyond it all, Soul music evolved, from a sound focused on love and the promise of a brighter tomorrow to a piercing, unabashed, righteous reckoning of the lives of Black folks in the United States.

Marked by powerful rhythms and grooves, and the piercing lyrics of Curtis Mayfield, Gil Scott-Heron, The O’Jays, Marvin Gaye, The Chi-Lites, Nina Simone, Sly & The Family Stone, and many others, the era was defined by an unfiltered commentary on racial inequity and righteous artistic reclamation.

“Soul – Civil Rights & The Revolution” is a unique session that captures the immense impact of soul and funk music in this timeline, songs that became anthems, and their cascading impact on humanity as a whole.
