It’s a package deal—the Bilous family.

One of the most beautiful things about trail running has very little to do with running itself. It’s the people standing beside the trail.

You see families giving up their weekends, losing sleep, waiting through the heat, the rain, and the long hours—all to support someone chasing what most people would call an unreasonable hobby. Not just running. Ultrarunning. And not just ultrarunning
a backyard race, where nobody knows when it will all end.

That’s where I met Ryan last year. To be honest, I didn’t know much about this tall, handsome guy (which, for the record, is the complete opposite of this short Asian man 😜). But this year, I got to know a little more—not just Ryan, but the people who helped shape him.

Jason, his dad, is one of those people whose kindness fills a space without trying. Always smiling. Always making people feel like they belong. For someone like me, who sometimes still feels like a stranger, that kind of warmth means more than I can put into words.

His mom is no different. Watching the three of them together reminded me what home feels like. I’d be lying if I said it didn’t make me miss my own family.

Ryan is just a fucking good human. That’s the statement.

He came with a goal. When he reached his personal best, he could’ve called it a success and gone home. Instead, he chose to keep grinding. I watched him fight through some miserable loops, refusing to let discomfort make the decision for him. That kind of grit deserves every ounce of respect.

I’m damn proud of you, brother. Maybe not by blood, but definitely through this crazy backyard family we’ve all somehow become a part of.

Keep that fucking handsome smile wherever life and these trails take you.

And thanks for being kind to this short Asian man.
