✨ That’s a wrap on the 2025 AIAS Berkeley - AIA East Bay Design Competition! ✨ This year, our student competitors were challenged to reimagine Berkeley’s iconic Hearst Memorial Gym for the theme: ‘Adaptive Reuse for a Sustainable Future’. Teams presented thoughtful proposals for transforming the historic structure into an inclusive, vibrant community hub, integrating public spaces, wellness centers, sustainable recreational facilities, and more.
🎨 The day was packed with creativity, collaboration, and inspiring ideas! Students worked tirelessly to refine their designs, balancing historical preservation with innovation, landscape integration, and sustainability. From morning brainstorming sessions to evening presentations, the energy was electric, and the dedication was remarkable.
A HUGE thank you to our incredible sponsors—@AIAEastBay, Studio KDA, Studio T Square, Mark Steppan, Devi Dutta Architecture, Feldman Architecture, and Cafe Strada—for making this event possible. We’re also immensely grateful to our mentors and esteemed judges for their guidance and expertise, and of course, to our hardworking competitors for their creativity and passion.
🏆 Congratulations to all the winners and participants for your outstanding work! Stay tuned for even more events as we continue to celebrate and foster innovation in design!

Thanks to everyone who showed up to our walking tour and visiting the inside of the Hearst Gymnasium. It really gave us a good glimpse of what the building was used for and how its use has changed overtime. Stay tuned for more events to come!
