𝗖𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗽𝗵𝗶𝗰 𝟯𝟱𝗺𝗺. Keeping with the 1.5X Anamorphic theme, Second Reef has added a 35mm to their unique set at NAB. For those who haven't seen these yet they are 1.5X with an oval iris to provide more of a 2X feel while allowing a higher resolution capture on large format sensors using a slight wider capture aspect ratio for a widescreen desqueeze. Also, these feature Cooke /i Data, making them ideal for more VFX or VP driven productions. Likely a rental item for many, but they make a pretty image for sure. #lens #anamorphic

𝗦𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝗥𝗲𝗲𝗳 𝗖𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝟭.𝟱𝗫 𝗣𝗹𝘂𝘀 𝗔𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗽𝗵𝗶𝗰𝘀. Lots of glass I previously covered at the Lens Summit, but these are new. This was the first time I could put my hands and eyes on them up at Koerner Camera.

I've seen it reported weirdly, but these are actually 1.5X anamorphic primes with an oval pupil to provide more of a 2X bokeh feel to the bokeh while utilizing a larger physical format size than you would using a 2X. 3:2 with a 1.5X desqueeze rather than a narrower 6:5 2X desqueeze essentially. This provides a bit more resolution in practice as well.

The set is impressive, uniquely designed, and has it's own character. It will be 35, 50, 75, 90, and 135mm all at T2.8. Optically, they provide very good close focus performance while being fairly corrected, but not to the pristine level. But you can maintain subjects in focus on a plane easily. Flare is nice on the focal lengths i was able to see, but not too overt. Shootable wide open too.

Under the hood the mechanics feel good, and they are lighter weight than you'd might think. You will also notice these provide lens metadata, which isn't exactly super common in most anamorphic lenses currently available. It's a very nice touch that will allow them to sneak into VP and VFX shoots much easier. They feature connectivity via PL mount pins or a cabled connection on the lens body for cameras that don't take it through the mount or auxiliary devices that need metadata injection separately.

A pleasant surprise for sure.
