2026 Scholarship Banquet & Awards Program on Saturday, October 24, 2026.

This date holds a deeply meaningful place in our hearts as we commemorate the 7th anniversary of the passing of Enero A. “Ro” Cooper.

We choose to honor Ro’s memory by turning remembrance into opportunity—investing in deserving college freshmen as they begin the next chapter of their educational journeys.

Dr. John Bannister Selected for Prestigious Fulbright U.S. Scholar HBCU IEA Program

Johnson C. Smith University proudly celebrates Dr. John Bannister, Director of the Center for Innovative Teaching and Learning (CITL), on his selection to the Fulbright U.S. Scholar HBCU International Education Administrators (IEA) Program—a highly competitive and prestigious international opportunity.

The Fulbright U.S. Scholar HBCU IEA Program is designed specifically for senior administrators and executives from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Through fully funded, two-week international seminars in France and Senegal, participants engage deeply with global education systems, build sustainable international partnerships, and strengthen global engagement initiatives at their home institutions. The program advances cross-cultural understanding while expanding international opportunities for students, faculty, and institutions alike.

Dr. Bannister’s selection reflects his outstanding leadership and commitment to innovation in teaching and learning. Participation in the Fulbright HBCU IEA Program will further enhance Dr. Bannister’s ability to advance JCSU’s global vision, foster international collaborations, and create meaningful global learning opportunities for the campus community.

Historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) are institutions of higher education in the United States that were established before the Civil Rights Act of 1964 with the intention of primarily serving African Americans.[1] Most of these institutions were founded during the Reconstruction era after the Civil War and are concentrated in the Southern United States.[2] They were primarily founded by Protestant religious groups, until the Second Morill Act of 1890 required educationally segregated states (all in the South) to provide African American, public higher-education schools (i.e. state funded schools) in order to receive the Act’s benefits (19, generally larger institutions, fall under this Act). - via @wikipedia

#JCSU was represented at the University Innovation Fellows Meetup that took place at the University of Twente in Enschede, Netherlands. The event brought together more than 200 students from and 60 faculty from various countries. Dr. John Bannister, attended along with two students, Eryn Glover and Jayden Petrus. Dr Bannister became a Hasso Plattner Institute of Design (d.school) Faculty Innovation Fellow after completing his presentation on the work he has done developing the JCSU Center of Innovative Teaching and Learning. The meetup served as a platform for global collaboration and knowledge exchange among the participating students and faculty members, fostering a vibrant environment of innovation and creativity.

HBCUs date back to the 19th century, when many offered Black students an opportunity for higher education. Today, they continue to serve a vital role in higher education.

Around half of historically Black colleges operate as public schools. In addition to granting thousands of degrees each year, HBCUs also boast illustrious alumni like Martin Luther King, Jr., Oprah Winfrey, and Vice President Kamala Harris.

You can find most of the 101 HBCUs in the Southern states. Around half of these HBCUs operate as private schools, while the half are public institutions.
