my go-to almond cake for elevenses or afternoon tea when there’s a crew here, so quick to whip up and the perfect use for an abundance of eggs from our chickens. our rhubarb not quite ready for harvesting so dug in the freezer for the brandied woodland farm cherries we made last year to accompany the cake, alongside a dollop of creme fraiche. have been making this almond cake for years, thank you very much @francespalmer, and now so can you as frances has generously included the recipe in her splendid new book Life in the Studio. I tweaked it the tiniest bit, using 1-to-1 gf flour (@bobsredmill) for the very small amount of flour called for, doubled the recipe for more of it ;-), swapped a beautiful homemade citrus liqueur gifted to me by @jbwirth for the grand marnier, and added an extra egg because our eggs are all different sizes right now. also, the cake and the book are both perfect for Mother’s Day, just saying.

Golden hour indeed. These ‘hot biscuits’ would likely have fallen flat in Tuesday’s rain without that horizontal trellis, and I can relate. Fruition would be nothing without the support from local shops, freelance florists, cart clients, and fellow farmers; it’s been that deep drink we didn’t know we were so thirsty for. This season has called for a bit of stretching and redirecting blooms that were otherwise destined for centerpieces and bridesmaids bouquets, and it’s been really liberating. Picking my own palettes and tucking in all the textures has made me grateful that I grew so much amaranth, and that I won’t have to eat it to get through this nearly wedding-less summer. More mixed bouquets coming to the cart (also @dogrosefarm_ @kindredearthfarm and @newfieldscountrystore )

we had a really terrible year for acorns in 2018. it was a pattern repeated throughout the northeast. while i griped about it in private, i also contacted a lot of folks in my general area, to see if they had a better situation. they didnt. i didnt say much on here, but if you know me you know my autumn feed is usually loaded with acorns. well, it turns out sometimes private griping pays off. the wonderful @futureiswilderness (follow them, if you aint. follow again if you are! or at least send them a huzzah) listened to my whining and responded with a lovely gift of white and chestnut oak acorns. certainly enough to make a fresh batch of acorn miso!

there is a lesson here. we arent ever alone, and we arent ever alone in this. we cannot ever do everything. but together we ARE everything. this year i stood on your shoulders. this year you held me up. this year you gave me support when I needed it, whether or not I asked.
