I got invited to go on a little freshwater surf yesterday. Rode a 9’6 Sano Special.

Logging behind a boat is incredibly fun. It’s so much about speed control. In my opinion, it feels more like surfing than some of the smaller boards I’ve tried on a wake. You stall, fade, cross-step, speed up, and repeat until your legs burn. Incredibly fun.

“today’s my day”

the day before the race, I told my crew that was my mantra for this year’s @wser . After so many setbacks recently (including an ankle surgery 9 months ago), I didn’t have expectations other than wanting to run the performance I knew I could do. Of course, I wanted to podium, but the real motivation was seeing the best version of myself. That’s what it was all about, and I feel like I did that. My legs submitted to the downhills, I let go of the fear of rolling my ankle, and my mind stayed locked in…. pure racing flow state you don’t feel often. Yeah, I was fit coming into Western States, but it was self-belief that told my body to execute.

now, after three previous attempts at this course, I feel like I finally nailed it. And running sub-14 no less. So wild.

I love this sport because it never stops teaching me. Last weekend I found a new version of Ryan, and I can’t wait to see what this mind and body can do next.
There’s a lot I want to say, but the main thing is thank you.

First, the FANS and COMMUNITY. 🗣️ Thank you. This community is so special — I feel so loved. I haven’t always been welcomed in this sport, but I feel really seen and celebrated.

Second, my SPONSORS. Thank you. 🙏 This sport isn’t cheap, and I feel lucky to do it. Thank you for believing in me through the lows and highs — I’m always seeking real partners, that’s where the magic happens.

Third, MY CREW. 💥 Thank you Tina, Michael, Alex, Clara, Mike. You all were the REAL DEAL. F1 execution all day. Thank you for rising to the occasion and being my hype people. I feel so lucky.

Fourth, my coach/medical/physio team! 🏥 Running is the easy part but i have a whole team behind me. Jason Koop, my coach—2.5 years ago, at a coffee shop in Arizona, I asked him to make me a champion and he took me on. Thank you for the years of hard work; we still have work to do! Thank you Dr. Backus at the Steadman Clinic for the best care 9 months ago. And thank you to my physios — Ana Robinson and Neil.

And finally, thank you to my competitors: those who finished and those who didn’t. We pushed each other. It was teamwork.

Patience is the ultimate weapon in ultrarunning.

@canyonwoodward is wielding it perfectly in his Western States debut. Passing through Rucky Chucky at mile 78 in 8th place, he has methodically climbed from 20th position through the early checkpoints.

He’s holding steady and sticking to the plan; everything so far is just the prologue for what’s to come.

“I never really wanted to run 200 miles. But at some point, after standing so close to it for so long, observing wasn’t enough any more.”

Matt Shapiro photographed 200-milers for a long time before running the Mammoth 200 himself. What kept pulling him back was the ordinary stuff that happens when people stop pretending they’re fine. The quiet hours in the back of a van. The small acts of care at 3am. The kind of thing you only understand once you’ve lived inside it.
