The Lowe Art Museum at University of Miami was selected as one of this year's "Visual arts shows you can't miss this season."

Congratulations to our fellow museums who also made the cut on this coveted annual list of the must-see exhibitions for Miami's new season of the arts — including Miami Art Week and Art Basel Miami Beach in December.

The upcoming exhibition "Young, Gifted and Black: The Lumpkin-Boccuzzi Family Collection of Contemporary Art" opens October 23 at the Lowe.

The nationally acclaimed exhibition highlights an emerging generation of black artists engaging the work of their predecessors, while also mining new vocabularies of symbolism.

Features 52 works by 49 leading contemporary artists, all of whom have been active in the global art world for a decade or more. David Hammons, Glenn Ligon, Lorna Simpson, Henry Taylor, Kara Walker, and Nari Ward are among the established practitioners represented in this show, while Jordan Casteel, Jonathan Lyndon Chase, LaToya Ruby Frazier, Paul Mpagi Sepuya, and Vaughn Spann number among the younger artists who are included.

The Lumpkin-Boccuzzi Family Collection features a range of contemporary artworks in all media. Established and emerging artists of African descent predominate, with a special emphasis on younger voices of the last 25 years.

A warm thank you to the team at the Lowe Art Museum, especially to Dr. Jill Deupi, Dr. Tola Porter, Melissa Diaz, Paulina Picciano, and John Witty for welcoming my FIU Exhibition Development students for such a generous tour and behind-the-scenes look at museum practice.

We visited “El Pasado Mío / My Own Past: Afrodescendant Contributions to Cuban Art” and “Afrocubanismo: Highlights from the Ramón and Nercys Cernuda Collection”, and later learned from the team’s insights into exhibition planning, collections, and curatorial work.

The visit also created a valuable dialogue with our recent trip to the Frost Art Museum to see “Modern Cuban Painters: From Havana to New York Revisited”. Experiencing these exhibitions in succession allowed students to examine how museums construct different narratives around Cuban art—and how curatorial choices, collections, interpretation, and display shape those narratives.

The AFA's national tour launched at the Southampton Arts Center, where it is currently on view until Sept. 27.

The national tour will also travel to the Sarasota Art Museum, the Gibbes Museum of Art in Charleston, and the Lowe Art Museum at University of Miami.

The exhibition creates conversations across time and space that are only possible through Glickman Lauder’s singular collection.
